i ask because i susspect my head gasket is on its way out, i was gonna go down 'cheap street' and do it myself and just replace the gasket but then thought while its off i might aswell do a proper job of it lol

Gives you a vague idea of how much, but i also got quoted £100 for a pressure test and skim. So as always try a few places for prices.

if you have drove the car for a long period of time while it's overheating then yes it would need to be skimmed but if you have not let it over heat for long then it would not need to be skimmed.

If you're gonna take the head off get it skimmed regardless if the engine has overheated or not, nothing worse than putting it all back together and it leaks again.
Just as an after thought, why do you suspect the head gasket- what symptoms are you having/got?
