High fuel consumption

Hi again, I drove to work and back yesterday, 72 miles return journey and ended up using 150 miles worth of petrol. The car runs as it always has done, really well, idles at just above 750 RPM. I could litterally see the fuel gauge dropping as I drove. This has been happening for about a week but I thought I'd take a bit more notice yesterday. Its a 2003 1.4 multiplexed. Any suggestions?

It would be really good to go a whole week without something going wrong with my motor.

Thanks

You need to work out the mpg.

Its not had a proper dealer service as I do them myself. Spose I did the basic service about a year or so ago. Is there summat like a choke vavle in the air inlet that could be stuck. Im gonna take the plugs out to see if its running rich after xmas.

Ill work out the MPG next time I fill the tank but I used to get about 100 miles per 1/4 of a tank, thats motorway and A road driving, but now its down to about 50-60 miles per 1/4 tank

What are your running temperatures like now? Could be your thermostat jammed open, my mpg plummeted from an average of 44mpg to 36mpg.

Check your air filter isn't clogged up or split.
It might just be the cold weather although an increase in fuel consumption like that sounds more serious.
Just as a guide for you, mines a 2003 1.4 and in August was doing 11.31l/100 mile (40mpg) and now it's increased to 13.9 l/100 mile (33mpg).

Just been for drive and the temps are good, warmed up to normal operating temperature in 3 miles then I sat stationary for 10 mins and watched the temp gauge rise and fall and the rad fan went on and off so the thermostat seems to be working fine to me.

I'll check the air filter after Xmas but thanks for the advice. Also the MAP sensor is coming out and the Up stream oxygen sensor will get a looking at.

Thanks

Did you ever get to the bottom of the poor mpg

Yeah I thinlk I've sorted it out. I replaced the plugs and the air filter, the old filter was a nice black colour instead of sponge coloured. Im now getting 39.76 MPG (according to my I-phone app) so cant complain at that especially at this time of year and thats M'way, A & B roads and around town. Thanks for the advice guys.
