#1: head gasket/cambelt price+renewal Author: greenpug2222, Location: bradfordPosted: Sun Dec 25, 2011 10:27 am ---- Hi all,
I have the water behind the glove box thing and you have all told me i need to get the head gasket done..... so ive phoned around........
Most places want around 400-500 quid but one place and i must stress it is a friend of a friend but not mates rates has said around the 300 mark. This is to replace gasket, send head away for pressure testing and a skin if needed, cambelt renewal and fitting back together again.
Im thinking this price is good and need to ask you all is there anything i need to ask when i call him to give them the go ahead as the price has been relayed back to me from my friend.
All help appriciated

You can get the running water sound from the heater matrix if the cooling system hasnt been bled correctly.

The car also has a funny fit when i start it from cold for the first time say in a morning...... its as if the engine shakes and does not want to bun its fuel....this shakes the car but only for approx 5-10 seconds then its fine...
#4: Re: head gasket/cambelt price+renewal Author: starkie, Location: 5826Posted: Sun Dec 25, 2011 12:20 pm ---- sounds more like it needs a good service to me.. and a seal/new rubber somewhere.. check under the oil cap for milky type substance to check head gasket
#5: Re: head gasket/cambelt price+renewal Author: greenpug2222, Location: bradfordPosted: Mon Dec 26, 2011 6:35 am ---- No milky residue on filler cap.
Why is it only now that you are telling me i may not need the head gasket doing when before when i posted before everyone said i do need it doing??
Im confused

He means his charges are good,i.e 'his rates are on the ball' or 'his rates are spot on' etc
If there's no mayonaisse looking gunk on the filler cap or dipstick and no oil in the expansion tank then chances are your H/G is ok
I say chances as I had a H/G go once and it didn't show any of those symptoms as it hadn't broken through into an oil channel
#9: Re: head gasket/cambelt price+renewal Author: greenpug2222, Location: bradfordPosted: Thu Dec 29, 2011 3:21 am ---- Ok
I think the gasket has gone through into just the cooling gallery so that is why there is no oil mixing.
When i wrote up my symptoms before on here i was told by all that is was my head gasket and thats why i decided to call around for prices.

You could even try getting a compression test done on each cylinder, not sure if that would show anything though. A good indication (90% of the time) that the head gasket has gone/going is the milky mayo on the expansion tank cap and under the oil filler cap and under the rocker cover.
I remember having the sloshing sound in my footwell, so I drained the coolant and bled it properly and the sound went away.
Good luck.

So the car is back from the garage....
My mechanic can not find anything wrong........... Hes done compression tests checked radiator and expansion tank and found nothing wrong.
He said it could be the water pump but didnt want waste my money if it wasnt that.
He also said the system is bleed properly as all hoses and ratiator etc were hot as needed.
I do have a new expansion cap on order so will try that.
