problem im having recently is when braking the pedal becomes stiff, and brakes arent as effective, this only happens occasionally. If i release the pedal then press again its soft again seems to be getting more frequent.
had a search but couldnt find a definitive answer
cars a 1.6 xs 2000
Any idea what could be causing this?
thanks in advance

When you turn the engine off then pump the brake pedal. For the first few pumps it should feel normal and then there will be no vacuum remaining and the pedal will go solid, probably action the brakes higher up. If this is what you feel/ experience when the fault occurs then you know what you're looking for eg loss of vacuum or servo fault
I'd check for damage or weakness in the side walls in engine to servo vacuum pipe as it can crush with the vacuum. Servo has plastic check valve so I'd check that out. After that then it's checking with a vacuum pump and gauge to see if it can hold vacuum
