#1: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: GLX_laney, Location: Plymouth, DevonPosted: Sun Jan 01, 2012 5:16 am ---- Hi Guys,
Wondering if you could help me... I dropped a friend into town late last night. As i left the city centre, the car began to shudder vigorously in lower rpm's, but as the rpm's got higher, the shudder remained there but was less.
The shudder stopped when pressing the clutch in, something to do with a gearbox possibly? Also, the idle is pretty rough, as if it's coughing and spluttering. There's also a bit of a shake when it's idling in neutral.
I popped the bonnet when i got home and the engine sounded pretty rattley on idle. When revving, (this is the best way i can describe it) it literally sounds like it has a cold!
What can i do? Thanks for taking the time to read!
(Keep in mind, this is my first car. I don't know the first thing about anything to do with motoring! )
Thanks!
Neil

#3: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: Abzynthe, Posted: Sun Jan 01, 2012 5:34 am ---- Coil pack or head gasket?

#5: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: Abzynthe, Posted: Sun Jan 01, 2012 5:49 am ---- Take the coil pack off and they are underneath

Remove them with the correct sized spark plug socket.

Will keep you updated. Work begins after a bacon sarnie!
#11: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: GLX_laney, Location: Plymouth, DevonPosted: Sun Jan 01, 2012 8:46 am ---- UPDATE
Have finished with it for now! I put everything back together, the spark plugs seemed difficult to get out, so they must have been in fine. Maybe one isn't working right?
Would it be worth replacing them, as they seem fairly clean considering?
#12: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: -Dave-, Location: North ManchesterPosted: Sun Jan 01, 2012 9:11 am ---- Don't take this the wrong way but as this is your first car and you don't know what to look for my advice would be take it to a local garage and get them to check over it for you. But as they do it ask them to explain and show you. That way you learn at the same time do next time you know what your looking at.

Thanks mate. I have a friend who works for a well established garage down here. He pulled out all of the spark plugs and said they looked fine. he cleaned them off with a wire brush and re-inserted them. He seems to believe that the coil pack is on its way out. Would this be likely?

As i said same with mine, i had 2 that went black from unburnt fuel as i did limp it around a bit.
#15: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: pug-206-boy, Location: Eastbourne, East SussexPosted: Sun Jan 01, 2012 4:59 pm ---- it could possibly be an injector...
the same thing happened to me once..turns out one of the injectors clogged up...worth a thought? :/
#16: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: GLX_laney, Location: Plymouth, DevonPosted: Sun Jan 01, 2012 5:50 pm ---- Cheers man, will get it looked at in a proper garage tomorrow. That's if i get up the hill! Might just have to make use of 1st gear more than usual! lmao.
#17: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: tailhappy, Location: barnstaplePosted: Mon Jan 02, 2012 12:44 am ---- mine was the coil pack the 1 and 3 injectors and lambda sensor worth looking at all 4 of thoes as alot of people i know is EXACTLY identical probably
#18: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: DavidPCoates, Location: UKPosted: Tue Jan 03, 2012 5:16 am ---- Sounds like injectors to me also, my recent problems were down to 2 injectors shorting out.
As previously advised, get it to a garage that has the peugeot code checker, they can eliminate certain things, and generally will have spare bits around to check on your engine, hence you dont have to buy parts.

YES! I was wondering what this was...
Also, you have a PM
#21: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: SmithyXSI, Location: Newcastle-upon-TynePosted: Wed Jan 04, 2012 6:15 am ---- Well if it smells of unburnt fuel i'd be inclined to say at least one of your spark plugs isn't firing so its running on at most 3 cylinders. Which would explain the lack of power/rumbling etc. Either the spark plug is knackered or the coilpack is?
#22: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: GLX_laney, Location: Plymouth, DevonPosted: Wed Jan 04, 2012 11:33 am ---- Right lads.... Had it on a Diagnostic machine today. Garage basically came back to say it wasn't coil pack. (They were right) They told me it was the ECU that needed replacing. (Expensive job)
(Not being able to sleep until i knew i had tried another coil pack) I bought one from a car dismantler down the road (great reputation, so trust them dearly) i found that it definitely wasnt the coil pack.
In desperation and hoping, praying and begging it's not the ECU, i've bought a set of plugs to try tomorrow.
Fingers crossed. The end could be near!
#23: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: danlouiee, Location: Plymouth, DevonPosted: Wed Jan 04, 2012 11:38 am ---- How much they quoted on an ecu? Try and get a second hand one of possible?
#24: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: GLX_laney, Location: Plymouth, DevonPosted: Wed Jan 04, 2012 11:43 am ---- They said a new ECU, i'd be looking at about a grand? Said they dont do it, but gave me a name of a garage in Ivybridge that would do fittings and repairs...
Hopefully, some new spark plugs will resolve all of my worries.
Hopefully.
#25: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: 206Mike, Location: ManchesterPosted: Wed Jan 04, 2012 12:50 pm ---- Ive had the exact same problem and was advised new ECU for similar price, Im guessing second hand from a 1.4 8V would do the trick. Is it just ECU, BSI, and key that are needed for an ECU swap?

#32: Re: Severe power loss...sounds like a tractor 1.4 8v Author: 206Mike, Location: ManchesterPosted: Fri Jan 06, 2012 3:16 pm ---- :D how did they find if it was a faulty fuel injector?
