#1: Gti 180 running rough Author: Burwhale, Location: AustraliaPosted: Sun Jan 08, 2012 11:41 pm ---- Hi All. I have owned my GTI 180 for 2 years, however I feel that its running rough. There are no error codes showing, but I feel it should be performing better than it is now. It seems sluggish off the mark until you get into the magic 5000 rpm area. I know this is kinda normal for 180's but it seems worse than normal. I also feel that cruising a constant revs (3000rpm or so) it seems overly grumpy ( for want of a better word). Running rough etc.
The only other symptom that may be relevant is that it seems hard to change gears smoothly. Despite the clutch replacement, it seems hard to match up the revs with the clutch. You put the throttle down a bit, nothing much happens, then push a bit more and it revs a bit too much/ or not enough and makes for a messy gear change.
I havent modded the car much. Its got a K+N panel filter, put in about 7000Ks ago, and thats about it. Its had a major service 2 years ago, coil pack replaced about a year and a half ago. Clutch was replaced a year ago. Oil and coolant levels are normal. It has 92000 Ks on it, and I dont thrash it ( much anyway ).
Its going in for a major service and to get some oil leaks fixed in 2 weeks, so if anyone has any ideas what I could do to make it run better I could ask the mechanic. I haved searched for similar posts on this, however nothing matching came up. I am aware it could be many things, but would be very interested to hear opinions.

Also as Lewis says try to get Bocsh super 4 pugs, dont put NGK plugs.

I also use the 5W40 fully synth oil as well. I will try and wash the air filter but I dont think thats the probably. Cant hurt though.

I got the oil leaks fixed, and at the same time got a new timing belt and major service. Good news is it is running really well ( better than ever). The mechanic found that the timing belt may have been out by a tooth previously. He also showed me the fuel filter , which was disgusting. Anyway its been running really well ever since. Seems it already had Bosch plugs in it.
As is normal with these a antipollution fault popped up today. I wont ask about it here as I know it could be many things. I am getting a small oil leak fixed next week so I will ask him about the other fault ( if it is still there).
