negative camber on my gti

#1: negative camber on my gti Author: Bill_G, Location: Kent PostPosted: Tue Jan 10, 2012 7:14 am

i recently had an off road excursion in my car which has resulted in me having to purchase another rear axle.

however after having this rear axle fitted (second hand axle btw) my car now seems to have quite a large amount of negative camber. it also drives like a bag of s**t. you know those skate boards where you can wobble your feet independantly of each other withthe bar across the middle? the handling is pretty much on par with that. there is also a horrible knocking noise that comes from the rear when you drive over a succession of bumps.

i have no idea how to fix this problem, i havent checked the hub bearings yet but will do asap. other than that im stumped for ideas. any suggestions welcome please.

Are your shocks dead, are the bearings in the rear arms dead, is it fitted properly?

Have you fitted just the axle or have you had new rear arms too?
Have you baught an axle that has been crash damaged already?

the rear axle come off of a scrapped 206 gti. the whole axle was complete with shocks, arms torsion bar and hubs. donor axle come off a 56k gti. axle fitted properly and everything is tight.

When you say negative camber do you mean the wheels are pointing in towards the top of the wheel arch?

I pressume you mean you have bad camber on the rear of the car?

Sounds like the bearings have collapsed.

im gonna check the bearings tonight, i guess they are pretty straight forward to do. are there any specialist tools needed or will a socket set and a big hammer sufice?

give me 900 quid and the car is yours!

straight forward, remove the wheel, knock out the torsion bars and remove the anti roll bar, and then you can knock out the trailing arm easily.

but once the arm is removed you will have to put new bearings on.

If the bearings are that worn I would imagine the axle tube will be knackered.

As edward said it the bearings are gone and you are still driving it the axle tube WILL be f****d too which means another axle

thanks for your help peeps. but the axle is completly fubar'd

jacked it up and checked the wheel bearings, they were fine, but the top bearings for the arm and the axle tube were flapping around like a witches tit. further more the camber has got worse so now when the car goes over bumbs, the O/S wheel rubs on the inside of the wheel arch.

gonna buy another axle and cross my fingers that it doesnt have the same problems. gonna contact the guy i got the other axle off and hope for a refund or something.

cheers again Smile

second hand axle is always a gamble, anything older than a 05 reg is just basically useless

You can buy a drum axle car and swop the stub axles and hubs to allow you to run rear discs if that widens the choice of axles available.
