206 gti 2001 model, been to moon n back (113k)

Bit tappy when cold but gets better as engine warms up.

Sometimes no sound other times its quite apparent.

Engine is strong and doesnt feel different when making the noise???

Any ideas Question Question Question , Is it just because its an old knacker? Confused

Only probs I know of are the exhausts a bit rotten and timing belt is overdue for changing and it needs a service. Question but reluctant to spend any money on afore mentioned if its a bagokak!!!!

If it only happens on idle and low revs, it's normal

Has it had the original hydraulic tappets replaced yet?

Pre April 2003 built EW10J4 engines have known problematic hydraulic tappets Wink

If its tappety when it's cold change the oil and filter. If it goes away you had clearly just been tight/idle. I had a similar problem with a mx-5 that the oil filter was so old it restricted flow and starved the tappets. 30 quids worth of oil n filter later all was well with the world. Mine also use to 'tap' occasionally if thrashed, then it would return to normal.
If the oil and filter doesn't cure it then a bit of engine work will be needed.

Game over then, if its definately rattling from the top end of the engine......
needs tappets....no idea what the cost is to replace. May as well just put up with the rattle.

Rolling Eyes

You need to use the correct spec oil, wrong oil can cause all sorts of damage / problems.

Actually it's got a lot quieter now, and since oil change my mpg has got noticeably better.
