#1: manifold rattle or engine rattle Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Wed Jan 25, 2012 3:21 am ---- Got a rattle which seems consistent with engine speed and get's louder the harder I rev it although it get's better as engine warms.
What does the manifold rattle sound like?
Are there any tell take signs it's manifold or engine?
Thanks.
#2: Re: manifold rattle or engine rattle Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Wed Jan 25, 2012 3:24 am ---- 206 gti 2001 138 bhp by the way
It's done 113k
#3: Re: manifold rattle or engine rattle Author: rick-gti, Location: welshpool, mid walesPosted: Wed Jan 25, 2012 3:32 am ---- mine does the same, 2000 gti 138 when i rev the car over 2k it makes a tinny rattle i do plan on welding the manifold if i can do it while its on the car. but wont be for a while.
#4: Re: manifold rattle or engine rattle Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Wed Jan 25, 2012 3:53 am ---- Fair enough but how did you find it was manifold and not engine?
Thanks.
#5: Re: manifold rattle or engine rattle Author: rick-gti, Location: welshpool, mid walesPosted: Wed Jan 25, 2012 4:08 am ---- i am not 100 % sure as of yet, one way you could find out is to press down on the manifold (with a metal bar) where it joins the cat and get someone to rev the car to see if it makes a difference
#6: Re: manifold rattle or engine rattle Author: shadow, Location: gloucesterPosted: Wed Jan 25, 2012 4:09 am ---- mine has the same symtoms its more of a humming than a rattle between 2k to 2.5k rpm.

You can either tighten it up or remove it...probably easier said than done.
I've not heard a GTi get that doesnt do it.

I had a similar 'humming' sound on mine, cambelt change sorted it.
When was your cambelt last changed?

That's something that will be definitely getting done at mot in march, to be perfectly honest I don't know if it has ever been changed. And its done over 100k
There is no record in the service history.
So can cam belt cause a rattle noise as well?

First thing that should have been done if there are no records, guess you been very lucky.
Not sure if it would cause a rattle. Could it be the cat that is crumbling inside, and the loose bits are rattling or it it a loud rattle?

Its more than likely the manifold heat shield, they always vibrate and cause noise at the RPM you have said.
EDIT: Sorry, just noticed it was "shadow" who put at what RPM the noise was.

Not loud at all but definitely doesn't sound right, it's the kind of noise that put's you off giving it some stick.
So I'm taking it easy till mot, when I can get cam belt done.

not due for another 4k or 11 months which ever sooner,
i did check the belts and all seem good but sometimes you can never tell until its off the car, my theory is either manifold, heatshield, engine cover (which will be off on the way home from work to eliminate or prove this).
#14: Re: manifold rattle or engine rattle Author: shadow, Location: gloucesterPosted: Wed Jan 25, 2012 12:48 pm ---- problem solved i took the engine cover off and found that 2 clips where broken so left it off drove home and no rattle/humming
