#1: Clanking noise from the front Author: bozmann, Location: NorwayPosted: Fri Jan 27, 2012 5:59 am ---- Hi! Just wondering if the top mounts, can be the cause of a thumping/clanking sound from the front?
When i drive over small sharp humps in the road, there's almost always a clank from the front, wich i can also slightly feel.
I also think its both sides front, maybe a little worse on the right.
#2: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: L5_UKS, Location: West MidlandsPosted: Fri Jan 27, 2012 7:01 am ---- It could be top mounts or drop links. Droplinks would be more common and cheapest so maybe start there?
#3: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: ukskater01, Location: sutton surrey/welwyn garden cityPosted: Fri Jan 27, 2012 8:23 am ---- My pug had seized droplinks which I've changed. This helped to stop the squeaking over speed bumps. Although my car still clunks on full lock because I need to change the top mounts. So it could be both
#4: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: bozmann, Location: NorwayPosted: Sun Jan 29, 2012 7:13 am ---- Drop links was my first thought also. But i changed these about 6 months ago
Been having this clunking noise for quite sometime, and its only getting worse.
So you think my best bet would be changing these?
#5: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: parkesie, Location: HampshirePosted: Sun Jan 29, 2012 9:11 am ---- get in there and give things a tug and watch for movement in wish bone bushes and top mounts.
Also look at ball joints and C.V joints.
#6: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: bozmann, Location: NorwayPosted: Sun Jan 29, 2012 1:02 pm ---- Will do! Thanks for the advice parkesie!
#7: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: bozmann, Location: NorwayPosted: Sun Mar 04, 2012 9:27 am ---- Had a look and a good tug at the bushes and the top mounts, and everything looks and feels tight. Cant really understand whats wrong.
Must be the top mounts if everything looks and feels tight right?
#8: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: bozmann, Location: NorwayPosted: Sun Mar 04, 2012 11:12 am ---- The rubber on top of the top mounts looks really good. Can it be that its only the bearing that needs to be replaced?
This:Strut Bearing
#9: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: Steve206, Location: UKPosted: Sun Mar 04, 2012 11:16 am ---- When i changed my droplinks, i had to retighten them a few days later, jack under the hub to take the pressure off, and check for any play in them.
#10: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: bozmann, Location: NorwayPosted: Sun Mar 04, 2012 1:35 pm ---- Aha! Will check it tomorrow.
Is it possible that the CV-joint is the problem? Cause i have the same clunk, when i shift gears hard.
#11: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: bozmann, Location: NorwayPosted: Mon Mar 05, 2012 6:53 am ---- I also noticed today, that it clunks more when i drive over humps while turning and i have the clutch in.

Im confident its not the droplinks. I remeber what it soundes and feels like when these are worn. This here is a much deeper clunk, that you can really feel in the car.
Took a good look at the top mounts, while jerking the wheel back and forth. And i could not see much movement, and the rubber looks good.
The fact that the clunk is when im changing gears, makes me feel that its something with the drive axle.
And the clunk is noticeable stronger, when im driving over a dump, while turning left.
#13: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: parkesie, Location: HampshirePosted: Tue Mar 06, 2012 5:19 am ---- Cv maybe or gear box/engine mount rubbers
#14: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: kit325, Location: LondonPosted: Tue Mar 06, 2012 7:19 am ---- Unbolt your droplinks, check if the drop links got a loose lower ball joint and tight upper ball joint. If this is the case, just reverse the position of the drop link when reinstall it, it should solve your problem. Main reson for that is the lower drop link ball joint suffer more movement and get loose faster then the uppper one.
If u need to replace the strut bearing, i got one oem bearing still in peugeot /citroen packing for sale for a tenner including delivery if your intrested.
Good luck!
#15: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: bozmann, Location: NorwayPosted: Wed Mar 07, 2012 6:37 am ---- Will try and reverse the drop links, just to make sure.
Parsie: the engine mounts have recently been changed.
Looked at the Cv, and the rubber boots looks fine, can these still be the problem?
#16: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: bozmann, Location: NorwayPosted: Fri Mar 09, 2012 6:39 am ---- today another problem appeared! Suddenly the abs light came on had a look at the sensors at the wheels, the cables, and everything looked just fine.
Whats going on?
#17: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: bozmann, Location: NorwayPosted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 6:46 am ---- I ordered a new wishbone and strut bearings today Lets hope that sorts it out!
Anyone got an idea about the abs light?
#18: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: bozmann, Location: NorwayPosted: Wed Mar 28, 2012 4:59 am ---- Replaced the strut bearing and right wishbone, and the car is good as new
The strut bearings where totally rusted and broken. wishbone not so bad, but ready for a replacement.
So the sound was clearly from the strut bearings!
#19: Re: Clanking noise from the front Author: netra, Location: AshPosted: Wed Mar 28, 2012 6:47 am ---- I had same problem and I thought it was top mount, but they said its the Shaft?
