#1: 206 Tidy up with some bangernomics thrown in update 31/1/12 Author: SteveTDCi, Location: Stamford PostPosted: Tue Jan 31, 2012 5:14 pm
    ----
So, i now have another car, this takes my fleet back up to 3. Last year i decided i wanted a cheap run around so picked up a cheap Polo, then just before Christmas I decided i wanted something a bit more winterised and with a towbar so i could put a bike rack on it. So i purchased a Volvo V40 for the princely sum of £410.

Well it turns out i don't like Volvo's, it was very comfortable with lots of toys but it was absolutely gutless, and the wife didn't like it. So it was sold. Strangely back to the person who i purchased it from. I did lose money but only £20 and he did get a free detail Smile I was happy as i didn't have to advertise it.

So over the Christmas period after thinking yes i'll get another cheap car to saying no i don't need one run the Cupra, I came back to the supermarket carpark to find .... I had to get in the passenger side of the TT as some moron had parked to close.

WE seem to have a thing around here with supermarkets, the same thing happened with my Cupra and the TT was backed into last year.

I spent some time researching cars and decided it had to be either a Fiat Punto or a 206. The 206 seemed popular and tidy ones sold quickly. If i'd have had more of a choice and budget then i'd have gone for a 1.8 Focus Zetec or a Fiesta Zetec S, the wife wanted a KA but i don't posses a welder Smile

I watched autotrader and ebay for some time and set my budget at £700. A 206 came up local to me on ebay, everything sounded good and it was only 6 miles away. I watched the auction and put in my maximum bid of £702.97 and .. won it ... but not quite, it hadn't met the reserve. A few emails between me and the seller and we settled on £800. A quick test drive and viewing by super bright led torch revealed quite a tidy little car, and it had a towbar which means I can stick a bike rack on it.

So the point of this thread, well hopefully i'll show that you can run a cheap car and save money. Its not going to be as nice as an Audi A1 or Polo but its comfortable and i'm not afraid to leave it anywhere.

I'll post up all the costs as well as pictures as and when i do things to it.

So the car ....

Its a 206 1.4 8v LX model. Its grey metallic, has tax until the end of June, Mot until the end of April. Its had the cambelt and head gasket replaced (2011) two new tyres (2011) and a service (2011) It has electric windows, remote locking, seats and a steering wheel.

Price Paid £800.
Insurance Fully comp (mirrored policy) £252

Faults, the temperature didn't rise above 70deg, research (206 Info Forum) shows that the thermostat is prone to failure, and i had the same issue on the Volvo, so this was first up to be change. The Coolant sensor was another issue, and since it smells a little rich I decided to change this too. NGK plugs are not good by all accounts, but i found out too late. So i have a set of NGK plugs that i'm not going to use. Its off to ECP to get some Bosch ones.

There seems to be an exhaust leek, it sounds like its blowing and there is a small amount of "soot" near a join, I'll get someone to do this as its not the time of year to be on you back in the cold (unless that's your profession :))

That's all mechanically that's wrong, there are some parking dents but i refuse to get these fixed and it needs a good clean Smile

Expenses so far,

£14 Coolant Sensor
£11 Thermostat
£12 Wiper blades
£42 Electric door mirror
£7.50 Pollen Filter (genuine peugeot)
£7.50 Air Filter (genuine peugeot)
84p Bulbs

Now although this is a bangernomics thread with added restoration It should be noted that whilst most people would be happy to not spend a bean on it I like to make sure that although its a cheap car there is no reason why it cannot be looked after. I'd rather waste money on service parts knowing that its going to run right than risk breaking down putting other road users at risk and also the wife. Besides, bits that I change now will see me through 2 years motoring and save fuel. Although i doubt i'll keep it that long.

I've also picked up some "GTi bits", well I say GTi, the steering wheel is sun damaged and is to be replaced by a leather one, the clock has broken and i lie the look of the GTi gearknob,

Total spend £30

Thats about it for today, pictures will follow as will fuel economy and all of the mods along with the obligatory detailing resto thread.

Oh, and the 206 is called Vera Smile

I mananged to grab a few photo's at the weekend but not many, I do need to get a new camera instead of relying on the iphone ....

The inside was dirty, and really needs a wet vac. I managed to give it a really good hoover, but because of the type of carpet it holds everything. So it was a case of hoover, brush, hoover, brush hoover .... I found it easier to remove the passenger seat to get down the side of the centre console, i need to remove the drivers side one but because it has a sensor for the airbag it means disconnecting the battery. But as i don't have the radio code i have to wait until i fit the aftermarket one in.

It started to get dark and i needed to go out for sunday dinner so didn't get chance for too many more pictures ...

plastic was cleaned with Megs APC and wiped down with Finish Kare tyre/plastic kote

I need to get some cheap mats too

The pollen filter arrived today, ordered yesterday from ebay from a Peugeot dealer and fitted at lunchtime, you just pull the old one out from the scuttle panel. I think it needed changing Smile
