#1: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:07 pm ---- Hi guys, Just got a new 206hdi and it's struggling to start. Bought it saturday and it started fine all day, then parked up saturday night until monday morning as I was sorting insurance etc...and since then it's struggling.
I let the glow plugs warm etc, go to fire it up and it turns a few times then spurts into life. Once running it starts fine again, but then if stood for a few hours it struggles again. I checked the battery today and its giving out 12v stood and 14odd running so that seems fine, Is it likely to be the glow plugs? Iv never had glow plugs go so not sure what the symptoms are.
#2: Re: Struggling to start Author: Timon2210, Location: PalestinePosted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:15 pm ---- any lights on the dash,or mesg. on your MFD?
#3: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:18 pm ---- Whats MFD? Um, light on the dash whilst running? If so no, or when i turn key before starting all the normal lights come up.
#4: Re: Struggling to start Author: Martind, Location: Woolsery, North DevonPosted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:23 pm ---- What engine is it?
I had a similar problem with a 307 2.0 HDI 110. Same Symptoms
Changed the Glow Plug Relay, Glow Plugs and had it plugged into 2 different diagnostics (Showed No Faults).
Had the injectors Re-Furbed and now it all seems Ok.
#5: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:31 pm ---- 2.0 Hdi. Seems strange. So even after you changed your plugs it still did the same?
#6: Re: Struggling to start Author: Martind, Location: Woolsery, North DevonPosted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:36 pm ---- Yep changed them and still a pig to start
#7: Re: Struggling to start Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:39 pm ---- Battery
#8: Re: Struggling to start Author: Seabook, Posted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:39 pm ---- the pre-heating time in this weather is still next to nothing
12.0v reading from battery is really low, normally you should see at least 12.5-12.6v;
i would be surprise if you can start the engine
#9: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:39 pm ---- Oh. just dont understand why it was fine saturday and when its been running, but not when its been stood.

#12: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:48 pm ---- Well yeah it was 12.4V. Should I give the battery a full charge tonight to see if that helps?
#13: Re: Struggling to start Author: Seabook, Posted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:49 pm ---- 12.4v sounds fine to me :s
did you smell burning engine oil from the exhuast?
it is common that engine oil drip into the cylinder due to worn valve/ piston ring. quite common in the HDi block which cause difficult engine start first thing in the morning Last edited by Seabook on Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:55 pm; edited 1 time in total
#14: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 2:54 pm ---- Cant say i noticed anything no. Seems to give a puff of smoke when it does fire though
#15: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Wed Feb 01, 2012 3:02 pm ---- Should I try charging the battery? Changing glow plugs?
#16: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Thu Feb 02, 2012 8:37 am ---- Noticed today that the coil instrument on dash doesnt come on before i try to start, should it always?
The coil is the diesel pre heat warning light.
#17: Re: Struggling to start Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Thu Feb 02, 2012 12:13 pm ---- Glow plugs only work when its minus degrees
#18: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Thu Feb 02, 2012 1:09 pm ---- Today was -4 in Chester
#19: Re: Struggling to start Author: Seabook, Posted: Thu Feb 02, 2012 1:26 pm ---- only 0.5 sec preheating at that temperature
#20: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Thu Feb 02, 2012 2:30 pm ---- Having just read through a project thread, could it be egr related? I had mine removed on my 306 for years no problem?
#21: Re: Struggling to start Author: Seabook, Posted: Thu Feb 02, 2012 3:37 pm ---- mine was unplugged too, no problem to start this morning/ tonight where it was -5 outside.
it will take longer to warm up but it shouldn't affect starting
it takes about 4-5 sec cranking time though
#22: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 3:33 am ---- Right had the battery tested again today. Does anyone know what cranking amp the hdi should have?
Bearing in mind i had driven it for about 20mins before I had it tested, at 400CA it passed, at 600 and 500 it failed. Sticker on battery isnt very clear as to what CA the battery is...
#23: Re: Struggling to start Author: gixxerkev, Location: wiltshirePosted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 4:01 am ---- Changed the battery on the Mrs. 1.4 Hdi yesterday as at -5 C it turned over 4 times then died, £70 for new battery and al'ls sorted now. Was the same battery as yours TY-HDI, and it was probably the original.
#24: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 4:42 am ---- Ok thanks mate, think ill try a new battery and see what difference it makes.

#26: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 6:41 am ---- Iv ordered a new one now with 640ca. If that struggles i have a problem.ha

I deal with slightly bigger Exide batteries everyday at work, I would never spend my money on one of there automotive products.
Automotive battery = Varta everytime.

Exactly the same Varta battery as I have but you have the Bosch stickers on it
#40: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 10:20 am ---- So would you suggest swapping for a bosch s5? As they have those for around £8 more?
I went for the Exide as it had the largest CA there.
#41: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Mon Feb 06, 2012 1:08 am ---- Well even with a brand new 640CA battery it still turns over 3-5 times before starting. Sometimes i need to turn the key back off then try again and it starts on 2nd turn.
#42: Re: Struggling to start Author: DeadEyePaul, Location: Rugby,WarwickshirePosted: Tue Feb 07, 2012 4:51 am ---- I have a Bosch s4. Works lovely
#43: Re: Struggling to start Author: TY-HDI, Location: ChesterPosted: Tue Feb 14, 2012 2:30 am ---- Is there anything else you could suggest, as the new battery seems to make no difference.
Would the fact that its due a service make any difference? Should I try the glow plugs?
