Evening all. Cam belt and waterpump done today but i still have an intermittent ticking noise coming from around the steering pump area. I changed the cambelt because i thought it had frayed and way catching against the cover every now and again (every couple of seconds or so) but its not the belt. Any suggestions.

I find on my Gti when its cold, the belt can catch against the casing, only very slightly though. Push the cover with the engine running to see if it rubs. Mine stops when its warmed up. Could also be a bearing on any of the sprockets.

i hope you changed your bearing, and you could try taking your aux belt off and see if it stop,
might give you a better idea of whats ticking

As i'm generally a little lazy i have now only gotten round to taking the belt off.

Took the belt off today and guess what, the car is silent (as a diesel can be). Checked the pulleys etc, no play in anything. Put the belt back on and the noise comes back.

I checked underneath the car when it was at idle and the belt seemed a little slack, revved the car a bit and the belt tightened up and the noise goes away and sounds like a normal diesel rev. Pulled the tensioner tight when the car was running and the noised stopped at idle.

Also, at idle, when you look down the belt it appears to be 'jumping' on the pulleys and tensioners i.e not a smooth run if you know what i mean.

I'm now thinking...

1. Tensioner could have lost the will to live
2. Belt could be nackered

any other suggestions.

**Update**

I changed the aux belt as the old one seemed slack. The new one was indeed shorter, not by a lot though. Since changing it the noise has disappeared and all's well again.
