#1: fan not working Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Fri Feb 03, 2012 10:09 am ---- I'm pretty sure my fan is dead as I never hear it and car goes into red when stood .nun traffic, pretty quick.
Any tips on what to check before I invest in a new one?
#2: Re: fan not working Author: Pan24v, Location: SoutheastPosted: Fri Feb 03, 2012 10:23 am ---- Check the fuse in the engine compartment fuse box, its fuse No7 - bottom right as you look in the fuse box its a 20 amp.
Mine had blown so checked the fan assembly by taking off the black upper grille between the headlamps to find the motor had seized solid!
I haven't renewed as yet as i have my engine in bits but there are various types.
Are you doing the job yourself?

Where do you think a 206 radiator cooling fan is going to be?
Its going to be attached to the radiator, try looking through the grill, you will find what your looking for.
#14: Re: fan not working Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 7:07 am ---- I did and I couldn't see it, upon further investigation the fan seems to be located in a roundish plastic moulding behind the bulk head.
#15: Re: fan not working Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 7:16 am ---- I seem to have two radiators?
A bigger one at front and a newer looking smaller one behind it,
Do gti's have oil cooler's or is it more likely that it just has a newer radiator bolted to the old one?
I apologise for being automotively thick.

One is the aircon radiator

#19: Re: fan not working Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Sun Feb 05, 2012 6:04 am ---- Was stood in traffic today and noticed that the temp would creep up to 90 then drop to 70, would this suggest my fan is working?
I'm only asking as I cannot hear it come on or off, checked the fuse and that's fine.
On previous car's I've heard the fan and they usually still run after switching engine off?

It means you have a cooling system problem.
90 deg C is to cold for the fan to be cutting in.
#22: Re: fan not working Author: vitara4x4, Location: DONCASTERPosted: Sun Feb 05, 2012 8:27 am ---- before i changed my temp sensor that used to cut in at 90 degrees then dropped to 70
now it works at around 98 degrees and drops to 90
#23: Re: fan not working Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Sun Feb 05, 2012 9:33 am ---- Is there a potential problem with it cutting in too early? To be fair I don't think it was bang on 90 when it dropped, it was just in that area.
I found out that my over heating was caused by loss of coolant due to a leaky pipe which will be getting replaced ASAP.

#25: Re: fan not working Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Wed Feb 08, 2012 3:41 pm ---- You MAY have a problem with your temperature sensor being defective and causing the gauge to read low; that can be ignored. But unleas you put onto a reader you won't know if it is a sensor causing the gauge to read low or the thermostat opening early! Thermostat opening early means it will use a bit more fuel and the engine oil won't be at its designed operating temperature.
Neither are terminal, not inside 10s of thousands of miles anyway so it's up to you if you do anything about it or ignore it.
If it was me I would want to know what it was and have it working right but I also get accused of being pedantic. Quite a few here accept your gauge behaviour as "normal" for a 206.
