#1: Noise under back of car - whats this part please? Author: Werdnal, Location: Cornwall, UK PostPosted: Tue Feb 07, 2012 9:12 am

2.0HDi SW, 52 reg.

For some months now had a rattling noise under rear of car. Thought it was spare wheel cage, which was loose, but its now got worse. Took spare and cage right out, noise still there. I think I have isolated it, but not sure what the part is to be able to get new.

Its the rubber bushes on the end of the two steel beams that run from the central mounting point under the rear seat area, to the bottom of each rear wheel. Bushes look perished and there is some movement when beams are prised up with a pinch bar.

I assume its just a case of dopping out the bolts and fitting new bushes - DIY? If so, what are the bushes known as so I can order please.

Thanks Smile

The rear beam mounts are supposed to move slightly. I don't think I've ever heard of any needing to be replaced before.

Are you sure it's not your tailgate rattling?

+1 for exhaust mounts they are made of rubber and deteriate quite quickly!

Tip

Spray wd40 on the new ones before fitting(it helps them stretch enough to put them on)

Thanks for replies.

I've checked the exhaust, mountings all good except one which replaced.
Tailgate fine.

Sounds absolutely terrible today; can be heard even louder outside the car - metal on metal knocking sound. Hubby off tomorrow so he's going to have a look at it then.

Its definately under the car. It was there when I had MOT last Nov (not as noisy then though), and thought if it was suspension related they'd have found it, but didn't hence why I assumed it was the wheel cage. Looked around, nothing obviously loose, other than noticed these bushes showed signs of perishing. Not too bad on a smooth surface, but we live down a gravel farm lane, and sounds like the rear end if going to fall off then. Running out of ideas now Crying or Very sad !

Thanks but doesn't WD40 rot rubber? Washing up liquid is better!
