#1: 206 1.6 coolant temperature sensor (green plug) location Author: robertcains, Location: Derbyshire PostPosted: Tue Feb 07, 2012 2:30 pm

Hi guys,
I've trailed the forums & internet to solve a problem with my Roland Garros 1.6 with air con, Its done the common 206 thing where the temp gauge has gone into the red, STOP warning flashing & the fans permanently on.
From what I have read there should be two plugs for the sensors, one blue & one green.
After much inspecting the blue one is obvious on the thermostat housing, Underneath that plug on the side of the block itself is another blue plug?

It seems the 1.6 is a slightly different set up to the other motors in this respect? with both plugs disconnected & ignition on the gauge is still instantly in the red.

Any ideas please?

This may be completely irrelevant but my daughter's car has a green connector on the thermostat housing. Once hot disconnecting that sensor causes the engine idle rpm to increase but does not affect gauge reading. So the green sensor is the one that feeds the ECU its signal.
The blue connector on the side of the engine, when disconnected, causes the dashboard gauge to read 0 but has no effect on engine rpm so I assume does not feed the ecu and only supplies the gauge.
Then there is another blue sensor on the radiator header and it is this sensor that switches the fan on.
It may be irrelevant as hers is a 1999 8V 1.4!

I would hope it is a defective sensor, a broken or short on the sensor cable but I am also suspicious (expensive) that is is a defective ecu!

However, while being an ex mechanic, I am not experienced with these cars. Hopefully there will be someone who has experienced this before who will be along shortly.

You can have a mixture of green, blue & brown coolant temp sensors on a 206.

Which colour of sensor / sensors you have & also how many sensors depends on year, engine & if it has aircon fitted.

Not all 206's have a sensor on the radiator for the fan control.

Does anyone know if the plug I'm looking for (to the ECU) is on the block please, the only plug/sensor in the thermostat housing is the blue one.
At times like these I wish I had a Haynes manual.

Whats the VIN, ill have a look on Service Box & see how many coolant temp sensors Peugeot fitted at the factory.

Then again mines multiplexed.

I promise that you do not need a Haynes manual for this. Only because on this item it is not much better than being useless.

Been out this morning to look in daylight, I'm sure I'm looking for a green sensor into a yellow socket but not sure. I've blatently got a temperature sensor for the blue plug in the sensor but doubt it's the one in question. Any ideas? Don't want to pay a garage for a potentially easy fix

My motor is a different set up to your, probably because its the 16valve, I'm erring that mine only has a blue plug but as you say its a simple fix once identified & I too will repair at home if anyone can help.

The blue plug I show there I now think is AC related so don't remove that! I need to remove my air box and both of them are under there. If you can find them you need to replace the one with two cables going into it. I'm off to GSF to pick up both colour as not sure which is which util I take it off and will just take th other back. I'll try and take some photos later so you can see but might not be any help if you're on an 8v.

Robert - I found mine earlier. looked a little harder. Turns out the plug I though was a brown plug is in fact green when the crap is wiped off!! You can't exactly see it but it's in between the air filet and the block. image is crap as off the phone but foloow the yellow plug into the darkness and it's just in there. Basically try and follow your top hose back to the block and you should find it ok. Either way it should have two cables coming out of it.

Still struggling big time, I've changed the blue sensor in the thermostat housing & the pale blue one just below it on the block, cleaned up the earth(s) & cleaned the corroded contacts on the relays on the front of the rad (one was really bad).
Still got the temp gauge on red & the fans on permanently.
Any more things to look for please? It's a 1.6 16v btw.

Many thanks Nick

Blocked radiator perhaps?
