Whoopee doo! Clutch makes a crunching noise.

#1: Whoopee doo! Clutch makes a crunching noise. Author: bisphenol-a, Location: Antarctica PostPosted: Thu Feb 16, 2012 5:39 am

Normal acceleration on flat road, no problem. Maybe with slight roughness to it, mechanic said its fine. So I thought awesome, save some clutch money!

Today while running errands, acceleration on a mild upslope produced this noise that sounded like gear teeth grinding. Imagine 2 gears not aligned and the teeth just clash and grind together.

Few minutes later I was on a steeper slope, used handbrake this time. Caught the biting point, released hand brake and another does of that gear grinding noise.

The sound comes when I'm trying to get the biting point and when caught the sound ceases and car moves off fine into other gears. Seems to only occur more when accelerating up a slope so I'm guessing the slope gives the clutch more stress and work to do.

Worried? Yeah. Is it a worn clutch that can't grip when engaging? Transmission problems? Something far worse?
