Fuel gushing out when filled tank up...

#1: Fuel gushing out when filled tank up... Author: NiGHTS, Location: Australia PostPosted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 5:43 am

Hi guys,

Yesterday I went to fill the car up all the way with fuel and when I approached the limit, all the fuel started to gush out from underneath the car, near the fuel tank. First time this has happened so I'm guessing something under there has split or something.

Left the car overnight, and nothing leaked out. However, when I'm driving I noticed the fuel guage is dropping faster than normal so it's definitely got a leak somewhere...

Anyone ever experience this? Any common issue with a certain area I should be looking at first?

Cheers
Rob.

Probably the rubber coupling between filler neck and the tank.

take the back seat off,and take the black plastic cover off, which covers the fuel pump, and check for fuel leackage there,if you can see the fuel on top of the tank, then you need a new silicon seal, color is light blue.

I had a similar problem, well it wasn't gushing out, but leaking a small amount when over half full. Like Edward said it is likely the rubber coupling between the filler neck and tank. Or there is also a rubber/plastic breather pipe running from the top of the tank (close to the fuel pump and back up to the filler neck).

The easiest way to access and inspect both of them is to remove the right rear wheel and the plastic liner under the arch (if i remember rightly this is held on with some of those plastic clip things where you pull the middle out to remove them). If its gushing out then should be fairly obvious if the fault is here - although even a small hole in the breather will cause a fair amount of leakage when the tank is full.

Thanks guys. I'll check it out. I'm thinking it's what you said James because the fuel started to pour out only when I reached the limit of the tank. It's been leaking a little here and there ever since but the tank is still quite full...

Anyway, I'll start pulling stuff off and will get back to you with my findings...

Cheers
Rob.
