#1: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Wed Feb 22, 2012 3:20 pm ---- I was beginning to think it was time to start fault finding my daughters 1.4 8V. It runs sweet as a nut, starts instantly, plugs are a good colour and idles smoothly but only does 29mpg on short daily 5 mile runs.
I do feel it is a little low on power, not much but doesn't pull like I would expect as her brothers 1994 1.4 8V Corsa is definitely quicker and more economical and that has done 102,000 miles. the Corsa is only 55bhp when it leaves the factory so shouldn't be quicker than the Peugeot should it?
The car was fully serviced with new filters, plugs, oils etc. 1,000 miles ago and only 50,000 on the clock.
I thought that the mpg was very poor but some others here report similar mpg.
The only thought I am currently having is that the slight lack of power and poor mpg may point to the cam timing being out. The belt was changed 6,000 miles before we bought the car.
Any thoughts to confirm cam timing or other ideas and tests are welcomed. Last edited by kandlbarrett on Wed Feb 22, 2012 3:38 pm; edited 3 times in total

In addition, lots of short journeys means that the car will be running rich more (while it warms up), reducing the overall mpg.
What plugs were used? check that they were bosch super 4's and NOT NGK's Last edited by MrrNoName on Wed Feb 22, 2012 3:38 pm; edited 1 time in total

#4: Re: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Wed Feb 22, 2012 3:40 pm ---- MrrNoName: I don't recall which plug type I used so I will check. I know NGK can have reliability issues but is there any other reason to use Bosch?
#5: Re: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: Seabook, Posted: Wed Feb 22, 2012 4:08 pm ---- don't quote on me but the underpower feeling is probably because of the gear ratio.
as the 1.4 box run very long gear ratio

#7: Re: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Wed Feb 22, 2012 4:10 pm ---- As I put up in my post mine is averaging 35mpg, but I was hoping for closer to 40 mpg.
#8: Re: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: Andrew, Location: Black Country Ay IPosted: Wed Feb 22, 2012 4:20 pm ---- 1.4 box has slightly shorter ratios than the 1.1 (making it the shortest box on the TU 206s) - but the final drive is longer
I'm averaging 29mpg around town, sometimes up to 33mpg if I put helium in my right shoe
What you are reporting is normal
#9: Re: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: macca1411, Location: Westhoughton, LancashirePosted: Wed Feb 22, 2012 4:39 pm ---- According to my fuelly account, I'm getting 35.9 mpg.

#11: Re: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Thu Feb 23, 2012 1:26 pm ---- I'm on 220 miles and bang on half a tank, i'll brim this next week and see how we go, mines not advanced enough to have a trip computer, perhaps it wasn't standard on a Malta LX ... i've got leccy rear windows though

Pretty rare on hatchback 206's.
I know the RG has them as well.
#13: Re: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: devotedsniper, Location: Tamworth, StaffordshirePosted: Fri Feb 24, 2012 1:55 pm ---- I get 44mpg on average on my 60 mile a day journeys (going off Fuel log app, and my own calculations roughly get the same, i dont do the decimals), and on the weeks when im just going round the town i average 38, and i have abit of a lead foot. If anyone doesn't trust fuellog i got 340 miles to 3 quarters of my tanks (from full).
#14: Re: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: dsiingh, Location: West MidlandsPosted: Fri Feb 24, 2012 4:20 pm ---- Im getting around 37-39mpg im pretty happy with that. considering ive only been driving for 6months, but when i first started driving I used to accelerate heavily when moving off, these slowly eased off as i got to grips with my pug. im now happy with the mileage im getting. Ive read that spark plugs make a difference not to sure myself though.
#15: Re: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Sat Feb 25, 2012 4:15 pm ---- i've just inflated the tyres, hopefully it will improve things, they should be 33psi all round, mine were ... 25, 18, on the front and 25,22 on the rear. At least its saved money on not having the tracking done:)
