1.4 8V Average MPG
-> 206 Problems

#1: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: kandlbarrett, Location: Swindon PostPosted: Wed Feb 22, 2012 3:20 pm
    ----
I was beginning to think it was time to start fault finding my daughters 1.4 8V. It runs sweet as a nut, starts instantly, plugs are a good colour and idles smoothly but only does 29mpg on short daily 5 mile runs.

I do feel it is a little low on power, not much but doesn't pull like I would expect as her brothers 1994 1.4 8V Corsa is definitely quicker and more economical and that has done 102,000 miles. the Corsa is only 55bhp when it leaves the factory so shouldn't be quicker than the Peugeot should it?

The car was fully serviced with new filters, plugs, oils etc. 1,000 miles ago and only 50,000 on the clock.

I thought that the mpg was very poor but some others here report similar mpg.

The only thought I am currently having is that the slight lack of power and poor mpg may point to the cam timing being out. The belt was changed 6,000 miles before we bought the car.

Any thoughts to confirm cam timing or other ideas and tests are welcomed.

Others feel free to correct, but I think that mpg is pretty normal.

In addition, lots of short journeys means that the car will be running rich more (while it warms up), reducing the overall mpg.

What plugs were used? check that they were bosch super 4's and NOT NGK's

MrrNoName: I don't recall which plug type I used so I will check. I know NGK can have reliability issues but is there any other reason to use Bosch?

don't quote on me but the underpower feeling is probably because of the gear ratio.

as the 1.4 box run very long gear ratio

because it is cheap and has always been reliable?

As I put up in my post mine is averaging 35mpg, but I was hoping for closer to 40 mpg.

1.4 box has slightly shorter ratios than the 1.1 (making it the shortest box on the TU 206s) - but the final drive is longer

I'm averaging 29mpg around town, sometimes up to 33mpg if I put helium in my right shoe

What you are reporting is normal

I'm on 220 miles and bang on half a tank, i'll brim this next week and see how we go, mines not advanced enough to have a trip computer, perhaps it wasn't standard on a Malta LX ... i've got leccy rear windows though Smile

Pretty rare on hatchback 206's.

I know the RG has them as well.

I get 44mpg on average on my 60 mile a day journeys (going off Fuel log app, and my own calculations roughly get the same, i dont do the decimals), and on the weeks when im just going round the town i average 38, and i have abit of a lead foot. If anyone doesn't trust fuellog i got 340 miles to 3 quarters of my tanks (from full).

Im getting around 37-39mpg im pretty happy with that. considering ive only been driving for 6months, but when i first started driving I used to accelerate heavily when moving off, these slowly eased off as i got to grips with my pug. im now happy with the mileage im getting. Ive read that spark plugs make a difference not to sure myself though.

i've just inflated the tyres, hopefully it will improve things, they should be 33psi all round, mine were ... 25, 18, on the front and 25,22 on the rear. At least its saved money on not having the tracking done:)

I would guess this is slightly exaggerated.

I think its good every now and again, its meant to have cleaning agents in it but weather or not it does anything i dont know.

But is that not the same as Redex?

#29: Re: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: dsiingh, Location: West Midlands PostPosted: Tue Mar 20, 2012 3:39 pm

no its not exaggerated. I managed to get 420 miles and the needle went right the way down passed the redline.. where as i was getting 380 max....But then i dont rag my car around only on occaisions.

I heard redex isnt really that good and does more damage than good. not too sure though.

however as for vpower or premium fuel you should fill the tank up and reset your trip and see how it works for you. I think its worth the extra pennies

Slow down then, make sure the plugs and air filter are clean, the thermostat isn't sticking and sit at 60mph, you should break 40mpg easy

if i put about £25 quid in of premium unleaded in my 180 i get about an extra 10 miles or so

Thermostat changed a few weeks ago and car is now averaging 33mpg on 5 mile journeys. That will soon pay for itself.

33mpg = 19p per mile just for fuel costs!!!!!!!!

Getting 30 mpg mainly in town driving, pretty decent for a 180. Reading some are getting around the same figure in their 1.4 is surprising.

#35: Re: 1.4 8V Average MPG Author: kandlbarrett, Location: Swindon PostPosted: Sat Jan 05, 2013 7:16 pm

180 is a much more modern engine and fuelling system.

180 is 16V and multi point injection.

1.4 is 8V and single point injection.

I also suspect the ecu engine control will be much tighter on the 180 than the 1.4.

my 1.4 8v 206 is not doing good mpg round town long runs out i would say i am doing about 35 40 at most but heard peugeot 206s are never good on petrol my last car a 1.4 16v rover 45 was better. then before that 1.7 diesel corsa b was much better but because it was diesel just thought i would bring that up because diesels are always going to get better and boost gauges can be put in them lmao

If it helps revive this old thread, I suggest people sign up for Fuelly.com and add their current fuel up statistics. The more data is in there, the easier it is to find out if your readings are normal or abnormal. Bonus: you can get a nice picture to go with your signature for all forums you visit Smile
