Car pulling to the right??

#1: Car pulling to the right?? Author: furryhobnob, Location: Nuneaton PostPosted: Wed Feb 22, 2012 5:34 pm

Hi guys just a quick question, I changed my alloys last week and yesterday I noticed if my steering wheel is straight the car turns to the right. I have to keep the steering wheel a little bit to the left to drive in a straight line, the tyre pressures are ok as I checked them all today, the tyres are nearly brand new, there's no vibrations in the steering wheel or anything like that, could it be a track rod end or will it just need the tracking sorted? Car was fine before the alloy change over, thanks in advance for any advice

Sounds like your tracking's out. Just changing a wheel shouldn't have caused it though. Check the tyre pressures with a different machine or better still with the old fashioned tyre pressure check tool, and might be worth getting the wheels checked to make sure ithey're not buckled or the tyre been put on twisted.

Tyre pressure is fine I checked it earlier on today mate, I'll get the tracking looked at Friday and have my mate who works at the tyre place have a look over the tyres to see if they are on ok

It will be tracking unless you've damaged something massively by changing a wheel. Unlikely. Very Unlikely.

Edit: Also, wheels balanced properly? This is more in interest.. shouldn't cause too much of a issue re. driving straight.

Yeah all wheels are balanced mate, I'm thinking it might just be the tracking, I can't see me damaging anything while changing them over

Are they directional tyres, make sure you have the rotation arrow facing the right way. The tread could pull the tyre slightly.

Just a quick question, last time you had tracking checked, were the tyres evenly worn on the front end. A lot of people (including kwik fit staff) will fit a new tyre, have a part worn on the opposite side, and then track the car. When they replace the part worn a couple of years later, they wonder why the car is pulling and have it retracked, and the next time a tyre is replaced, same thing happens. You should always get the tracking done with 2 tyres of similar tread depth.

I've never had the tracking done on the car, but at the min there's 2 brand new tyres on the front, and 6 months ago I had the same brand of tyre, again brand new put on, and had no issues with tracking, also the tyres arnt directional, I will get the tracking checked when I'm off tomorrow and go from there

What tyres have you put on it mate? (Just interested really lol) I would agree with the posts here but along side them I would mention that I had four tyres put on mine not so long ago, had them tracked up and road tested, car pulled to the left slightly (only under acceleration) found this was because the car can transmit more of the power through the new tyres because of better road contact and it was simply torque steer. Could just be better grip, not spinning power away so torque steer is more obvious?

It's not doing it under acceleration mate, it's all the time, I have to keep the steering wheel to left to drive in a straight line, they are falken ziex that have been put on, I used them on my other alloys, and the alloys on my gti138 and have never had a problem with the tyres, cheers for your input though guys I appreciate it

Try swapping the rear wheels for the fronts ... see if it still happens.

Or swap right/left, etc.

Get it tracked & have the ESP steering angle sensor reset at same time.
