Noise coming from somthing on the transmission
-> 206 Problems

#1: Noise coming from somthing on the transmission Author: R_D_G, Location: Huddersfield PostPosted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 4:48 am

Ive got a wap wap wap noise coming from the front of the car. Its difficult to eplain but it sounds like something is moving side to side/ not balanced so I get a wap wap wap noise. There doent seem to be any vibration associated with it just the noise.

Its related to something on the transmission as it gets faster as the wheels turn faster and is not dependant upon throttle or brakes its there all the time.

I replaced the brakes last week and noticed that the cv gaitors werent looking clever, both outers had lost the outer tie and where loosing grease.
So I immediately thought that they must be the cause of the noise.

The weekend I replaced both drive shafts and changed the transmission oil.

But the noise is still there. It may be slightly quieter but its hard to tell.

Any ideas what could cause this? I dont think its a wheel imbalance as a high speed there isnt any wobble.

Worn alternator bearing or belt?

Is the alternator not connected directly to the engine? Therefore any noise would be dependant upon engine speed? Or am I missing something?

This noise is directly related to road speed the engine speed appears to have no effect.

The alternator is belt driven from the Aux belt, so if the belt is loose or the bearing has gone that could cause the noise.
