#1: Strange noise when steering Author: MattyP, Location: PlymouthPosted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 9:51 am ---- First noticed this yesterday, basically when i steer in either direction there is a loud whining sound, it's worse when the car is more stationary
I have checked the power steering fluid level which is fine, the steering itself hasn't become heavy so I am a bit stumped as to what it could be, any ideas?
#2: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: Big_Rich180, Posted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 10:12 am ---- It sounds like the power steering pump...thats all i've got lol
#3: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: MattyP, Location: PlymouthPosted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 10:16 am ---- thats better than me mate, i had no idea at all but I guess that is the only thing it could be
#4: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: rick-gti, Location: welshpool, mid walesPosted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 10:29 am ---- Can you here any whining coming from the pump? My old 306 pump had gone and was making a noise. Sounds like it is the pump.

#7: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: MattyP, Location: PlymouthPosted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 11:22 am ---- I don't think its the tracking as mine went a while back and there was no noise

Not sure where the pump is located exactly but it is coming from the front of the car and its only when i turn the steering wheel left or right
Are they cheap to have replaced?
#9: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: rick-gti, Location: welshpool, mid walesPosted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 11:45 am ---- Its to the left of the engine and has black plastic around it and a screw cap. Ive just sold one.

Ill give you a clue.
Look under the bonnet, the cap to the reservoir for the pump has DIRECTION ASSISTANCE POWER STEERING on it & a picture of a red steering wheel
#11: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: Yossarian, Location: NE ScotlandPosted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 12:16 pm ---- I had mine replaced, the pump cost about £40

#15: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: NathanG, Location: Ebbw Vagas (Wales)Posted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 2:28 pm ---- Its well easy to change, done mine yesterday as the steering is well heavy, took about 20 mins, 2 13mm bolts to the right as you look at it and 2 6mm allen key bolts to the left (you can get a 13mm socket on the 1 tho). You have to get these through the pulley wheel. A 17mm spanner to get the top pipe off and a pliers and screwdriver to get the clip of on the bottom pipe.
After changing mine u have decided that the steering is supposed to be heavy, actually the heaviest car i have ever driven. Oh well.
My main point is its easy.

#18: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: NathanG, Location: Ebbw Vagas (Wales)Posted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 6:14 pm ---- How much, they buying the tools to do the job aswell are they?
Pump £40, new fluid £7. 20-30 min job. Easy job aswell. Get a mate to help, always easier with 2 especially removing the aux belt.
#19: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Mon Mar 12, 2012 6:25 pm ---- I have a pump that you could have for cheap enough as I need the space.
As long as you don't have variable power steering
#20: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: lisa206, Location: BirminghamPosted: Tue Apr 21, 2015 8:44 am ---- Hi , just come across this thread as I am getting the same fault. Did you change the pump and did this solve the problem ??
Thanks
#21: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: stevo1600, Posted: Tue Apr 21, 2015 4:42 pm ---- thats a massive bump of an old thread
#22: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: HowlingMadMurdock, Location: Ashington, NorthumberlandPosted: Tue Apr 21, 2015 7:50 pm ---- If you get a screaming noise from the power steering it may be the pump or it may be an o-ring that has failed. I had the loud screaming noise on my X-reg 206 and it was the o-ring that had begun leaking. 20p for the ring.
The leak is not bad so topping up with steering fluid will do the trick for £4. It'll get worse over time so get it fixed but a pump can be bought for £20 online. Check your lines and your fluid first.
Shop around, Google will save you a fotune
#23: Re: Strange noise when steering Author: lisa206, Location: BirminghamPosted: Thu Apr 23, 2015 4:22 am ---- Ive had a look under the car and can see there's a split in the power steering pipe, so the fluid is leaking. Booked in to garage to be fixed now.
