1.6 GTi HDi Good deal?

Basically, instead of having a company car, i get a allowance instead. I currently have a Xsara, but lets just say, its doing my head in, repairs after repairs. Im going to throw it in a river soon.

I went and looked around a few car sales today, one had a 2005 1.6 gti HDI, 70k miles, full service history for £3200.

I thought that sounds good? Is it?

I just need to know if they are good solid cars really, and what the actual real life MPG is (i know it depends driver to driver etc)

I had a 1.4 petrol 206 as my first car, and i did like it.

Just need to get rid of my xsara!

1.6 HDI = worse engine Peugeot ever fitted to the 206.

206 + diesel engine = 2 litre HDI everytime Wink

Repeated turbo failure that leads to engine failure requiring a replacement lump, dual mass flywheel, 11 hours labour to change the clutch, electric power steering unit failures, FAPTASTIC depollution filter system that always goes wrong.

206 1.6 HDI = money pit Wink

2.0 HDI is virtually bulletproof & proven time & again to do 400K + miles if looked after.

The 2.0 HDI is what is fitted to my xsara at the moment. Not exactly the quickest in the world!

I thought it look good in the garage, and a bit quicker than the 2.0 HDI

Apart from the engine cover clips & bottom crank pulley issues both of which PSA Peugeot / Citroen have long since fixed with modified parts the 2.0 HDI will just keep on going if looked after.

Only other issue is idiots putting petrol in them that ruins the injection system.

Think about the weight difference of the two. Wink

Also Lee - would you take the 1.6 or 1.9? Wink

In all fairness if you think it was a good deal, and you're happy. Who is to say otherwise? Although the 2.0 is my choice everytime. Wink

1.6 HDI will be quicker then the 2.0 HDI, thats until the 1.6 HDI repeatedly breaks down & starts emptying your wallet Wink

Problematic unit or well proven plodder, I know which one any sane person would buy Wink

At least you asked BEFORE buying a 1.6 HDI powered 206 Wink

Just using the wrong oil in them kills the turbo that leads to engine failure.

But it looks so nice!! Haha.

Thanks for all the replies. Back to square one again, think my xsara needs a new power steering pump, new fuel pump (Why im chucking it). Just put new back pads and discs plus a oil change last week.

Evil or Very Mad

You can buy a 2.0 and make it look nice, you can polish a turd and it will look good! Reliability over looks most on here would go for.

Looks fine, although for the price you were originally about to pay then surely there are better cars? If you are set on a 206 for around 2k start looking around the 04-06plate range which has the better specs. Less money is then spent making it look modern.

That 206 has been sat in a field for a few months before Peugeot sold it though. Wink
