#1: GTi Circuit Racer - New engine! Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Thu Mar 29, 2012 4:08 am ---- Hi,
I bought a 206 GTi track car a few weeks ago that I am prepping for circuit racing.
As I'm in the RAF, I'll be racing it in the RAF Race Challenge. I last raced in this series in 2008 and 2009, in a Reliant Scimitar SS1 Turbo. I had a lot of ups (Birkett winners 2008) and downs (5 DNSs in 2009!) with that car and stripped it for a major rebuild at the end of 2009. I had a kid in 2010 and the car was looking likely to never get finished, so I thought that if I ever want to go racing again, I need to buy something that's ready to race or has 90% of the work done to it already. Long story short, I plumped for this 206 and got to test it yesterday at Curborough Sprint Track, nr Lichfield.
Overall I'm very happy with the car and can't wait to drive it again
It still needs the electrical cut-off/extinguisher/transponder doing and some welding on the cage, as it's not up to scrutineering standard in places. First race should be Rockingham on the 19th/20th May.
Cheers,
Raz

Looks good, very good price considering the amount that has been spent on it
#8: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Fri May 11, 2012 6:02 am ---- I still haven't found the time and money to do the last few bits to make it race legal, so the first race meeting will probably be Pemrey in June.

#11: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sun Aug 12, 2012 2:41 pm ---- For those that are interested, work is progressing on the Pug and I'm hoping/praying that it'll be ready to race at Mallory Park on the 30th September, last race of the season for the RAF. It's 99% ready now...
A few pics of the progress:
Still to do:
Welding on rollcage feet
Repaint rollcage
Fit longer wheel studs
Fit air filter to throttle-bodies (might not do that before Mallory)
Fit false floor (I have a sheet of chequer plate ready to go in)
Fit eye bolts for crotch straps
Fit 2L oil catch tank Last edited by razza987 on Sun Aug 12, 2012 5:20 pm; edited 1 time in total

I've done those already, it's a 6 point harness so I need to add two more under the seat for the crotch strap.
#14: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: simpsonrc, Location: coventryPosted: Mon Aug 13, 2012 4:30 pm ---- Looking good, im at Mallory park at the end of the month.
Spike , its easy just drill a hole behind the seat as low as possible through the tunnel and bolt the eye to the plate on the other side there should be plenty of room between the heat shield an tunnel for the plate
#15: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Mon Aug 27, 2012 6:39 am ---- Anyone who knows me knows how much I love wiring...
There were a lot of redundant connectors all over the car, so I started chasing them back to the fusebox, to find even more redundant connectors under the dash! Due to the Emerald ECU, Digi-dash and lack of fan/aircon/stereo etc, there are connectors hanging EVERYWHERE.

Yes Cosford as in near Telford
I've never known of the airfield to be used for trackdays, but I'm going to ask for permission to do a "low speed handling assesment" when it's ready

#20: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Tue Oct 02, 2012 6:59 am ---- Video of race one. Too cautious on the first lap, then had some lockups on the 2nd due to cold grabby brakes. Finished two places down from where I started, but had no issues with the car, just need to build confidence:
well held i must say, think i need to get out on the track next year test out the suspension and torsion bars
Cheers, not the most interesting race footage but the car was reliable and I was consistent. I qualified only 0.25 secs off a 205 Mi16 but was nowhere near him during the race.
Have some video of race 2, will upload that by tomorrow

Really looking forward to that, I've never raced at Snett (old or new) but I have ridden a bike there on the old circuit.
#29: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Mon Oct 15, 2012 5:47 pm ---- What a great event, the collection of race cars is fantastic, not a Caterfield or Radical in site
I had the second stint, after the 405 got us safely through the start and the first 55 minutes of the race. A big slide on the first corner told me to take it easy and get the tyres warm before pressing on. After about 15 mins, I was caught and passed by a Britcar spec Civic running on slicks. A few laps later I caught him up again, was he having problems?? The majority of my stint was now spent trying to find a way past him, as he was holding me up in the corners and then powering away on the straights. He left the door open a few times, but I didn't have the grip to stick it inside him. Very frustrating but good fun too. I eventually lost him after trying too hard at Nelson and running wide on the exit. Got my lap time down to 1m 32.9sec during that stint, pretty happy with that as I'd qualified with a 1m 35sec.
I was replaced by the 306, who did a 40 minute stint, then as the rain started we put out the MG, whose gearbox failed after 3 laps. This meant we had to put out the 405 again, with the intention of him putting in a mammoth 1hr 25 min stint to finish the race.
I was on standby for the final hour of the race, as the driver of the 405 was well into the wet weather groove. With 10 mins to go, his driveshaft gave up and I was waved frantically out of the pit garage. I haven't raced in the wet for a long time, and never in the 206. I'd said to the team manager that if I did have to go out, it would be a survival drive, nothing special. I gave it two laps to get some heat in the tyres and then thought I might as well use it as an experience, so started to push a bit harder. I was elated yet disappointed when the chequered flag came out. I recorded a peak speed of 112mph in the wet, only 8 mph less than in the dry, and a lap time similar to what Paul had been doing in the 405. Happy with that
So, after 1 hour we were 22nd, 2 hours we were 14th and 3 hours we were 11th. The failure of the MG gearbox and then the 405's driveshaft meant we finished in 14th place, out of 28 teams
Unfortunately my video footage is all over-exposed, I'll stick up a short vid of me pursuing the Civic but you can't see much...
Cheers,
Raz

#46: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Mon Jul 21, 2014 1:57 pm ---- After a frustrating Saturday afternoon trying to fault find the tow hitch wiring on the MPV, we finally made it to Mallory Park for the CSCC Revival event.
Qualy
A good turnout meant 16 on the grid for the sports V saloons races. I was getting into the groove in qualifying and trying to recall my braking points from the last visit here in 2012. I caught a very quick Metro and it took me 3 laps to get past him, then as I finally passed him going into Gerrards I looked in my mirror and saw smoke pouring out of his bonnet. On the next lap, halfway round Gerrards the car lost front end grip and I went shooting off onto the grass, luckily I was able to recover it and continue, but there was obviously something on the surface so I pulled into the paddock with 9 laps completed and a time of 57.25. This put me 9th on the grid with a Fiesta ST in 8th and a Honda CRX in 7th, both with qualifying times about .3 of a second faster. They were my targets for the race...
Race one
It was a rolling start and I think I was passed by a Midget who jumped the gun a little bit. Having watched the video I was way too cautious on the first corner, I seem to say that a lot! The Fiesta and CRX disappeared into the distance and I spent a long time trying to get past the Midget, great fun and we came extremely close to touching several times, but there was always a little bit of racing room. I was able to reel him in on the brakes at the Esses and Hairpin, but he would pull away out of the hairpin and had a better exit from Gerrards. I knew that the hairpin was the place to do it and eventually got myself into position and managed to make a pass, then let the car run wide on the exit so he would have to go round me the long way at the Elbow. I held him off into Gerrards and then it was a case of defending my position for as long as possible. Unfortunately the chequered flag didn’t come out as soon as I hoped, and as we caught a backmarker (the aforementioned Metro) there were no blue flags and he blocked me at the hairpin, allowing the Midget to get alongside on the exit and go round the outside at Elbow. We were side by side down the start/finish straight and at one point I thought he was trying to run me onto the grass, but he left me just enough room... We caught more backmarkers, he opened the gap, more backmarkers, I closed the gap but couldn't get past him again and then the flag came. So I finished in 8th but only because of DNFs in front of me. Great race, had a chat with the Midget driver afterwards and he was equally thrilled with the close racing. Fastest lap time 56.5 (my previous best was 56.9).
Race two
This was a sealed handicap race, didn’t find that out until the drivers briefing in the morning. Oh well, just race as hard as you can eh! Started in 8th place, rolling start again. Got caught napping as the lights went out and cars swarmed all over me, don't know how many places I lost. Also the CRX span going in to Gerrards and I think that slowed us all up, allowing the first pack to get away. Having watched the onboard video, I also knocked it into 4th gear, no idea why. By lap 2 the Midget from the first race was 100 metres ahead, I was now lapping behind a Spitfire who had the same fast/slow characteristics as the Midget. A few laps behind him checking out his weak spots and I made a pass, I think it was at the Esses??? He was all over the back of me until a few laps from the end when I pulled a gap... and that's all I remember. Car was handling funny and felt slower, reflected in the lap times with a best of 57.3. Pretty sure this was caused by me swapping the front tyres around between races to even the wear (stupid idea!). I think I finished 9th on Handicap as my handicap time was 56.5 so I was losing time hand over fist. Still really good fun, felt like a very long 15 mins!
Looking forward to Donny, a much more open circuit where the gearing is better suited (I tried 1st and 2nd gear at the Mallory Hairpin and neither was any good, as you'll see in the onboard video).

#48: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Aug 09, 2014 1:26 pm ---- Been doing quite a lot on the car recently, thought it might be worth an update:
Finally finished painting the 306 wheels I bought last year and bought and fitted a pair of Nankang NS-2R tyres. I'm going to run these on the back in the dry, with the aim of having another pair with extra cuts in them to run on the back in the wet and swap these to the front. Won't be as good as proper wets but will allow me to at least survive a proper downpour. I've fitted them to the front for now just so I can scrub them in (hopefully on the airfield at work...).
#49: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: DJ-, Location: UKPosted: Sat Aug 09, 2014 4:02 pm ---- Good stuff dude. Loving the detailed race descriptions aswell.
#50: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Aug 09, 2014 4:07 pm ---- During recent races the gear change has got quite noisy and clunky feeling. I haven't changed the gearbox oil since I bought the car 2 years ago so I did an oil change on it today, hopefully that will smooth things out a bit. The old oil was very metallic, as expected.
The plan for this winter is to buy an LSD, get it fitted and at the same time have the box overhauled and a short ratio CWP fitted, just need to figure out what ratio I want. I want to leave a little room for a small power increase and to not have it sat on the limiter at any track (Rockingham between turns 1 & 2/Silverstone hangar straight for example).
Speaking of power increase, I can't afford to modify or change anything on the engine, but I can get the setup checked at Emerald (30 miles from my house) and make sure it's running at optimum. The close ratio gears will then at least let me use more of the power more of the time
#51: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Aug 09, 2014 4:38 pm ---- The power steering is another area that's been giving me some issues for a while now. It seems to weep quite a lot during a race and the fluid is near boiling by the end. I noticed today that the loop in front of the rad that's supposed to help with cooling is actually behind the number plate part of the front bumper, so out came the hole saw... this should help a little bit:
Also made a new camera mount using an exhaust clamp and an old monopod, giving a good viewpoint just over my left shoulder. Should keep the scrutineers happy, the old mount was a spring clamp secured with a tie wrap, always got a raised eyebrow when they checked it
In the background of that pic you can also see where I've been scraping off sound deadening. There were a few bit's left in the car, so I've gone on a purge and pulled off some more trim and a few other bits and pieces, as well as grinding out the inside of the boot and bonnet. Hoping to save 10KG by the time I race at Donington on the 23rd, but I know that's going to be difficult to achieve without spending money on polycarbonate windows (another planned winter job).
#52: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Aug 09, 2014 4:53 pm ---- Another area I've been looking at is suspension setup, specifically negative camber, or a way to add it. I had a good look at the top mounts today and noticed that they appear to be fitted back to front. I can only assume this is something to do with the strut brace fitting? Anyway, can I just drill some new holes further inboard to induce more negative camber? Anyone know any measurements that give a set amount of camber?
Cleaned all the old dayglo orange tape off, looks much cleaner now
#53: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: usher, Location: northallertonPosted: Sun Aug 10, 2014 7:41 am ---- looking good, i have folowed you with drilling the holes in the number plate area, cooling being my focus atm, drilling the top mounts will the the easiest way to do the camber but depends alot on space, obviously you will probably not be able to use the strut brace unles its got adjustment on it, i would say an inch over on the top mount hols wil be ample for some camber best way would be to undo the bolts holdin the strut to the car and push it over and see how much camber you will get for a rough idea hard bit will be getting the holes in the right place
#54: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: usher, Location: northallertonPosted: Sun Aug 10, 2014 7:42 am ---- have you noticed any fade with the discs and pads being std size?
#55: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sun Aug 10, 2014 10:59 am ---- Drilling the holes in the right place "should" be easy, by making a cardboard template of the original holes and sliding it over to the new location. I'll have to enlarge the central hole too. This guy thinks 10mm=1 deg camber on a 306, so I can't see it being too different on a 206:
I had fade with the old Yellowstuff pads, they also lacked bite. The DS3000's have been as good as everyone says, so much more confidence inspiring. I'm running 266mm discs and I've had no fade problems in the 3 races since fitting them (Donington and Mallory).

#58: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Tue Aug 12, 2014 3:06 pm ---- Dont forget you need to redo your drop links/cut off the bracket on the coilovers when you rum more than 2 degrees
Awesome car razza! Great thread too. That is some good race footage. Any idea how much power the motor is putting out? Seems to pull damn good...
Cheers mate, it's supposed to be approx 175bhp at the moment, I can't confirm that as it's not been on a dyno since I bought it. It will pull a lot better once we get an LSD, lower gearing and a dyno session.
Addaz wrote:

Nice one Addaz, can you give me more info? I was going to replace the drop links with rose joint links anyway, seems a good time to do it.
#60: Re: GTi Circuit Racer Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Thu Aug 14, 2014 7:03 pm ---- The camber guage arrived today, so I quickly zeroed it and ran outside to give it a go. Now before anyone says it, I know it's supposed to be done on a billiard table flat surface but my drive is fairly flat and I was intrigued to see what sort of reading I would get. So, -0.5 on the front left and +/-0 on the front right. Some large adjustments are needed...
Unfortunately my race season has been pretty much scuppered by the current climate in Iraq, so I'm off to Cyprus next week for an unknown amount of time: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-28758370
The positives from that are that I get paid more and won't be paying for any race entries, so I can spend that money on go faster bits for the 206
Current shopping list includes polycarbonate windows, 25mm rear ARB and another pair of NS-2R tyres, maybe even the LSD if this situation drags on...

In other news, I've just registered for the 2015 Tricolore Trophy: trackattackraceclub.co...ason_id=25
It's a step up in competition compared to what I normally do, should have some good battles with the hordes of Clio's! They've just introduced a Production 206 class, but I have to enter Class A due to the throttle bodies and coilovers.

Pretty happy with 5th on the grid, considering I hate the wet, haven't driven the 206 in the wet since 2012 and haven't raced at Rock since 2008.
Race 1 m.youtube.com/watch?v=MvQHum3j56A
Got a reasonable start, first few laps were a steep learning curve as I tried to adapt braking and gear change points from the wet qually. Ended up in a fairly lonely 5th place, I was having to take it easy on the brakes as they weren't liking turn 2 and I was getting oil specks on the screen (dipstick had popped out) so I was short shifting. I could see a Clio 172 closing in my rear view mirror so I upped the pace in the last 2 laps to make sure he couldn't get close enough to pass.
Race 2 m.youtube.com/watch?v=rkHpBbVefEk
Great start, got up the inside of the Class B 205 into 4th place. Managed to hold that until the safety car pulled off on lap 3, whereupon I went straight on at turn 2 again! Pretty soon after that the car started to bog down on long left handers and it was at that point I realised I hadn't put any fuel in between race 1 & 2... First DNF of the year School boy error.
So, a good day with a disappointing end, but at least the car's in one piece and I've seen where it fits into the series. Roll on Brands Hatch

Wish the camera did not over light the view in front of the car. Now it's kinda hard to watch =(
(My GoPro has 'Spotmeter' to solve that problem)
Keep up the good work, you should post more info and pics!

I live near Kings Lynn so that would be me. No idea what a Pluriel is though?
Sorry about the overexposure of the video, it's because it points down into the car a little bit. I can point it straight at the windscreen but then I can't see what gear I've got selected on the video footage afterwards. I'd like to fit a rear view camera too.
#76: Re: GTi Circuit Racer - 2015 Tricolore Trophy Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Wed Apr 15, 2015 4:38 pm ---- A few random photos for you-
The new radiator setup. Golf GTi rad, shorter height than the original so we can try to get some cold air into the throttle bodies. Had no problems with cooling at Snetterton testing last week or at Rockingham, showing around 90 deg during track sessions.
New race battery, smaller and lighter than the original and means I can now fit a passenger seat for trackdays. Also cut some weigh out of the bonnet and tailgate and scraped off some more matting from inside the doors, weight should be around 915 KG.

Cadwell Park - Tricolore Trophy (Class A) - 18th July
Qualifying
Beautiful weather in Lincolnshire for my first visit to Cadwell Park since 2009. Qually was eventful, I suffered brake problems resulting in running straight on at Mansfield, and a spin at the Old Hairpin. Pretty happy with 8th on the grid (5th and last in class), with a 1:48.65, considering the problems.
Race 1
Got a good start, side by side with a Clio around the first three corners, with me eventually pulling in front. Broke away a little bit and ended up in a fairly lonely 6th place (4th in class) after another car withdrew. Didn’t push too hard as I still had concerns about the ability of the brakes to go the whole race distance without boiling the fluid. Fastest lap 1:47.14
Race 2
Another good start put me right on the bumper of the Renault 5 in front, but there was no gap so I had to back off a little. I made it through to 5th place (4th in class) but I wasn’t able to stay with the lead quartet, who were bumper to bumper for the whole race. I must have been pushing too hard to keep up as on lap 5 the brake fluid boiled and I lost the pedal in the braking area before the Mountain. I banged it into 3rd gear, pitched it into the chicane and after flying through the air and sliding up the grass, eventually came to rest at the top of the Mountain, unscathed. I called it a day for my 2nd DNF of the year. Fastest lap 1:47.42
So, disappointed at another DNF but delighted at getting away with it without any damage to my car or anyone else’s. The brakes definitely need an upgrade, there are a few cost effective options so I just need to decide which way to go.
Next event: Castle Combe - September 5th.
Cadwell results-
Race one: 6th overall, 4th in class
Race two: DNF
Fastest lap: 1:47.14

Qualifying
Having never been to Castle Combe before, I spent the week leading up to the event watching Tricolore videos from 2014. Having replaced the front brakes for a larger 306 GTi-6 setup, I was having to get used to the feel of the new setup, bed in the pads and learn the track all in the space of 15 mins. Even so, disappointed with 11th on the grid (8th out of 9 in class), with a 1:22.38
Race 1
As always, got a good start, making up a place or two by the first corner. On lap 2 I got a good slingshot onto the start/finish straight and managed to pass a Clio on the brakes into Quarry, taking me into 8th place (6th in class). A few laps later there was a safety car and on the restart I got away well, pulling a small gap from the Clio behind but had no chance of catching the Clio in front. A cracking race, with the Clio behind pushing me all the way to the flag. Fastest lap 1:20.65
Race 2
If I said I made another good start, would you believe me? Made my way up to 5th (3rd in class) by the first corner. I was immediately re-passed by one of the fast Clio’s on the drag up to Tower, and another one on the following lap. On lap 3 the Clio that had pushed me in race 1 made a pass, but then outbraked himself a few corners later and went grasstracking, leaving me back in 7th with a 205 hot on my tail. He had a look at a few different corners and I could see that the Clio that had gone off was back in hot pursuit as well. Eventually I overcooked it going into the final corner, had a huge slide and lost some momentum, allowing both cars to pass me with 2 laps to go. Best race of the year as far as excitement goes. Finished 9th overall (6th In class). Fastest lap 1:21.39
Post race examination showed that the oil catch tank was full and had begun venting oil onto the back left tyre, which is what caused the huge slide. Having vented 2L of oil in 45 mins of track time is not a good sign. A new engine may be required. A new engine may as well mean some upgrades, as I’m giving away 40-50bhp to most of the front runners in Class A. This was particularly evident at Combe where they were lapping in the 1:17’s.
Next event: Oulton Park – October 3rd.
Castle Combe results-
Race one: 8th overall, 6th in class
Race two: 9th overall, 6th in class
Fastest lap: 1:20.65

#86: Re: GTi Circuit Racer - 2015 Tricolore Trophy Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Sep 26, 2015 10:21 am ---- Had the car on the dyno for a power run yesterday at A Reeve Performance in Kings Lynn. I was told it was around 175bhp when I bought it, so it was a nice surprise to find it over that, with dodgy fuelling and an engine that's down on compression (100psi v 125psi back in April). It was still making power when it hit the limiter at 6800rpm. Better fuelling and a stronger engine with a few more revs should see 195-200bhp. Really need to find out what profile the Newman "Custom" cams are though. Thinking of putting the 138 head onto a 180 bottom end, does anyone know the CR would be?

Ive been to that breakers a few times, he's useless.
I have a set of 180 rods and pistons that I bought off eBay a few months ago, not sure if they'll fit the 138 crank though as I know they're different.

And also have you heard any news on the regs of the Gti cup? Aiming to enter it next year
This was the season finale for the club, with 3 races consisting of cars from all the different series' mixed together.
Qualifying
Heavy fog meant qualifying was delayed by 3&1/2 hours. When we finally got underway, it was pretty hectic on track with 42 cars entered in the event. I was building the speed, re-learning the lines and getting ready to really go for it, when on lap 5 someone’s engine blew up, leaving an oil slick for 400 metres. So that was that, no one was going to go any quicker and I was lucky not to go off when I first hit the oil. Qualified 14th (7th in Class) with a 2:23.31
Race 1
Great start, making up a place or two on the first lap. The safety car was deployed due to a start line incident and on the restart, the lead car made a pigs ear of it, backing up the pack when he should have been accelerating (as the rest of us were!). I had to brake to avoid rear-ending the car in front, whereupon I was passed by the two cars behind me, before the start line! I passed one of them a few corners later, then clipped the exit kerb coming onto the Revett Straight and lost all power. Pulled onto the grass and awaited recovery. Post race investigation found that the standard inertia fuel cut-off switch had tripped due to the vibration of the kerb. Tie-wrapped a rubber grommet over it to stop it happening again. DNF Fastest Lap: N/A
Race 2
Starting from the back of the grid (35th place), I had a lot of ground to make up, with a horde of Toyota MR2’s in front. Good start, made up 6 or 8 places by the first corner. Continued making my way through the traffic, passing 19 cars by the time I reached the Bombhole, whereupon my engine expired. Smoking like a Red Arrow, I immediately pulled onto the grass to avoid dropping oil. DNF Fastest Lap: N/A
Race 3:
DNS. Put the car on the trailer, watched the race and went home.

Just saying though, 2.23?! Thats crazy fast for a 206! My brothers BMW only manages a 2.14!
Then the E36s with an even more money spent only manage 2.11s
Very impressed is all i have to say!

#99: Re: GTi Circuit Racer - 2015 Tricolore Trophy Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Oct 15, 2016 10:00 pm ---- Where did the piston go? No idea!
The good to come out of this? I found out the engine had a lightened flywheel fitted.
And the bad? The Newman cams were damaged when the lifters disintegrated. I was planning to re-use these in the next engine.
#100: Re: GTi Circuit Racer - 2015 Tricolore Trophy Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Oct 15, 2016 10:12 pm ---- Within weeks of the engine blowing up I'd bought a 180 engine off Ebay, complete with inlet and exhaust manifolds, starter, alternator and PS pump. Manifolds to be sold, the rest are useful spares.
After the initial removal of ancillaries and manifolds, months passed until I did any more work on the new engine. Did a compression test and found low compression on cyl 1 & 2 (annoyed!!). So I removed the head, couldn't see anything untoward but had a lot of carbon build up:
#101: Re: GTi Circuit Racer - 2015 Tricolore Trophy Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Oct 15, 2016 10:16 pm ---- An hour with some gunk and a soft brush and I was left with this:
#102: Re: GTi Circuit Racer - 2015 Tricolore Trophy Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Oct 15, 2016 10:23 pm ---- I've had a lot of delays with the head due to personal problems minimising how much time I can spend on it and getting the inlet cam pulley bolt undone was a b***h! Had to make a homemade hernia bar to clamp the socket in place while I undid it with a breaker bar, with 3 sets of mole grips clamping the cam.
#103: Re: GTi Circuit Racer - 2015 Tricolore Trophy Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sat Oct 15, 2016 10:39 pm ---- This week I had the cams checked by Newman. Turns out they are basically 306 gti-6 Ph2 spec, 264* duration, 10.66mm lift. They think they can be repaired, so that would be good. Strangely enough, I bought a pair of 306 gti-6 Ph2 Newman cams back in July. The problem with these cams in the 180 head is that there isn't enough clearance for the lobes to rotate without hitting the head casting where the lifters are. The 138 head has loads of room here in comparison. So the 180 head is going to need a bit of machining to create clearance, I just need to decide whether to take the head to a machine shop or do it myself with a die grinder.
The plan is to use the same cams as before, but in a 180 engine. This will give me a stronger bottom end so we can rev it a bit more to maximise the cams. 200bhp should be achievable without stressing the engine too much, I don't plan to rev past the standard 7300rpm rev limit.
#104: Re: GTi Circuit Racer - 2015 Tricolore Trophy Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sun Oct 16, 2016 8:15 am ---- So that's an internally standard 138 engine revving to 6900 rpm? This is why I'm slightly worried about mine going to 7300rpm but I guess road work is slightly less stressful than track work. At least your rods stayed intact, could the piston have got a little hot on that cylinder causing it to break up?
That 180 engine has the floating crank pulley doesn't it? Is it not a good opportunity to go for some longer duration cams now?

Hi Edward,
My shift light was set to 6.5k, so it didn't get revved beyond that normally. It was only when it went on the dyno 2 months before it expired that I found it was making power all the way to the limiter at 6.8k.
Yeah I agree about the piston breakup, just seems strange that it wasn't at max revs when it let go, I'm sure it was only around 4-5k. That engine had done a load of road miles before it became a dedicated track car, then did the equivalent of at least 20 races during which time it had a couple of oil changes and nothing else.
With yours, I'd be concerned about running it to 7.3k on standard internals. Has the bottom end had anything done to it at all? Lightening and balancing? I am tempted to strip the bottom end of my 180 engine and get the pistons and rods lightened and balanced, I'd be happy pushing to 7.5k and maybe a little bit beyond if power's still climbing.
#106: Re: GTi Circuit Racer - 2015 Tricolore Trophy Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sun Oct 16, 2016 10:09 am ---- Mine is a completely standard bottom end. As a road car it will spend very little time at full throttle and not much time at peak revs. I would be a bit wary of taking it only track as I reckon the oil temperature would get too much too. I think will go for forged rods and pistons ultimately rather than the 180 bottom end. Will cost more but at least it's a known engine rather than an unknown used engine.
What miles were only your engine? Doesn't the 180 engine rev to 7500 rpm?

My car doesn't have a standard speedo so I don't know how many miles it had done. I'll ask the previous owner.
Every resource I've looked at states a rev limit of 7300rpm, with peak power around 6800.

This is definitely a mild attempt, basically focusing on knife-edging the split and polishing the walls to an 80 grit finish. No drastic reshaping will take place. I've done tonnes of reading over the last decade about porting and polishing, this will be my first practical attempt. It's started now, so there's no point telling me I shouldn't have done it...

#113: Re: GTi Circuit Racer - 2017? Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sun May 21, 2017 9:55 pm ---- Been in the new house for 3 months. Spent the last few weeks building a decent work bench,
so that's given me somewhere to work on the cylinder head(s).
I bought a standard EW10J4 cylinder head this week with the plan of dropping the Newman cams into that, putting it on the J4S bottom end and just getting the car running again. I finally unboxed the cams that I'd sent to Newman for checking and refinishing about 9 months ago. Turns out they're 264 400 cams, not 420 as Newman told me over the phone. This means they're 10.1mm lift instead of 10.66. The good news is that this means they spin freely in the EW10J4S cylinder head without any machining, which means I might have bought a J4 head for no reason...
Only problem is I started but haven't finished the port/polish on the J4S head, so I either need to put a load of hours into that (hours I don't really have) or fit the standard J4 head. Decisions, decisions...
#114: Re: GTi Circuit Racer - 2017? Author: razza987, Location: NorfolkPosted: Sun Sep 09, 2018 12:04 pm ---- IT'S GOT AN ENGINE!! It won't start at the moment but it's turning over.
It's a 180 engine (Not the one I was working on the cylinder head of). Cams have been swapped out for the Newman Cams I had in the old engine. It's been a tricky process figuring out what needs changing or adapting, but I'm nearly there now...
