STOP light on
-> 206 Problems

#1: STOP light on Author: pandapaws, Location: Herts PostPosted: Thu Apr 12, 2012 3:47 pm
    ----
Hi,
Just wondered if anyone can help with this one - I'm considering buying a friend's 02 1.4 Look 206 and noticed on a test drive today that the STOP sign is constantly on. My friend says it has been for about a year and thinks it is down to a rear door sensor - the door had a knock which has been knocked out. The door locks with a key but sometimes plays up when central locking with the fob. The airbag light is also illuminated. The car passed its MOT yesterday although it did get an advisory for the airbag light. Her husband is going to look at the door sensor this weekend but I wondered if it may be something else going on instead? I am absolutely paranoid that it may be head gasket related, having just had HG failure on my very low mileage Rover 25.......!
The 206 has only done 44000 and has a full service history - the last service being Nov 2010 at 41000. The car is lovely apart from these little niggles, but I am worried that they may turn out to be not so little niggles in the future!
If anyone can help I would be sooooo grateful.....

Thanks so much Smile

Advisory for the airbag light... Hmmm. Pretty sure that's a fail nowadays.

Hi,
Apparently it just squeaked in before it becomes a fail at the end of the month! So if I do buy it I will have a year to sort it out Smile

I was thinking the same thing

Why do I get the feeling CRASH DATA STORED will be in the airbag ecu memory Laughing

Airbag warning light on should have failed the mot test.

Just found this online:

Vosa, the government agency responsible for the MoT, has indicated that up to "late spring" – probably May, although the exact date hasn't been set yet – "failures" relating to the new tests will first be treated as "advisories". This means that if you are tested now and have a warning light that's faulty you will have until the next MOT renewal date to get it fixed.

This is going to sound really stupid and girly but is the Crash Data Stored a bad thing? Please be gentle with me - I have been driving a Rover for some years and all this onboard computer stuff is new to me!

Do you think I should be worried about the airbag and STOP light? I haven't handed any money over yet so could still walk away (although I may be one friend less if I do...)

Any advice will be very gratefully received!

If it has crash data stored then that would be why the lights are on as the car thinks it hasnt been fixed. They would need to be cleared.

Thanks Abzynthe, is that an easy thing to do? I'd rather solve the problem now than next year and end up panicking if it's not a simple fix!

Have you got any ideas about the STOP light (keeping fingers tightly crossed...)? As I said I am so scared in case it relates to a serious engine problem - I don't want to be exchanging one dying car for another!

Thanks again for reading this and your help Smile

Why have you set your heart on buying a 206 with underlying problems?

Its been driven around for a year with the STOP warning lamp on, that just shows an owner that doesnt care for there car.

The airbag warning lamp is on, that shows an owner that doesnt care for there own or passengers safety.

What other nastys is it hiding? Wink

I have to agree with this, its starting to sound like a bad buy and beleive me if the car hasnt been looked after you will spend the rest of its days putting it right.

There are so many decent cheap 206's around these days I just cant see the point in buying one with problems.

It's because I am desperate - my Rover has HGF and I need a cheap runaround ASAP. I only use my car 4 days a week and do about 3 - 4000 a year so don't want to spend several thousand on another car. We also have a 2yr old Touran which is our family car. This car seemed to be a Godsend - my friend advertised it for sale the same day my HG failed and it looked like the answer to my problem. It passed the MOT on Wednesday and has a full service history. It was only when I test drove it that she pointed out the warning lights - but her husband thinks they are nothing to worry about. He is looking at the rear door sensor this week and thinks that will fix the STOP light. Just hoping it is something that simple but I thought I would check with the experts!

Thanks again,

You can fix a K series headgasket for less then £400 but you have already set your heart on buying this 206 so its pointless trying to talk any sense in to you - end of thread.

It's not just the HG, the gearbox is also suspicious Sad

I haven't set my heart on anything, I'm just a normal Mum with not much spare cash - like most of us - trying to resolve a situation to allow me to get my son to school and me to work next week.

I'm sorry if I have annoyed you in any way, I just thought this was the best place to ask for advice from experienced owners who may say "Oh yeah, that's a common fault".

Sorry again Sad

What Mr.BSI has previously said, is that if you are set on buying a 206, look around. There are many around for a good price with no faults.

Our of curiosity, you said 'spending thousands' on another car, how much is she offering this car to you? What year? What engine?

these day you can pick up a 206 around a grand with no known major fault

It's an 02 1.4 Look with 44000 miles for £1200. I have been looking at other cars but for that money they are all high mileage or much older.

I have had several quotes for fixing my Rover and the cheapest has been £550 - if I could get it done for under £400 I would!

Don't forget to leave money spare for the fixing of items. Wink

Have you given the car a good check over? Tyres? Is it a CAT C? D? If so I would say it is a high price.

But you could get a high mileage car thats been looked after as apposed to the low mileage car that hasnt.

I think as said, you already have your heart set on it, you should really shop around for a better one.

Yes it has new tyres and passed MOT. Don't know if it has a CAT C - it's petrol if that helps!

Thanks for your help and consideration Smile

I would leave well alone if it has warning lights on.

The STOP light is there for a reason, and means what it says.

The STOP light might be related to the airbag light, but consider that the STOP light might be related to another issue with the car. You could end up spending as much again to get the car to a safe and roadworthy standard. MOT means nothing. Many people on here will tell you that they can get a car through the MOT with faults because they know the tester, plus the MOT is only really valid for the time the tester was looking at it.

At the end of the day, it's your money so spend it however you want. You could always pay for an expert like AA or RAC to give the car a once over. They may identify something that you haven't been told. I know it sounds daft, but people do lie about a cars history when they want to get rid.

Thanks Macca,

I've decided to walk away as things just don't add up. My friend's husband has now said that if I disable the central locking the light goes off so he thinks it is the rear door and it "only" needs a new latch.......there seem to be too many little things that "only" need this doing for my liking!

Thanks everyone for the help, advice and courtesy that MOST of you have shown me.

Mr BS - if you find a thread boring or annoying you don't have to read it or comment on it - try clicking out of it instead of throwing your weight around ; )

Bye Guys
