#31: Re: How to de-cat a 1.1 Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Sun Apr 15, 2012 5:11 pm ---- The pikey way is to take the CAT off and bash the insides out. Was thinking about doing it to mine as it will fail on emissions MOT time anyway so I might just got for a cheeky "special"
Regarding performance; It is actually more likely to noticeably improve performance over something with a bigger engine. The reason being there is less power to start with. For example; you are less likely to notice an extra 4 bhp on a 100 bhp car than you would bhp on a 60bhp car.

I'm aware the performance won't increase but there's always that popping sound isn't there ;)!
I reckon i'll play it the pikey way and head down to the breakers yard and get one from a same car and gut it, then i can always keep mine for replacement when my MOT comes right?
Just to clarify my CAT is from the Manifold right? so when I goto the breakers yard what do i need to get?
many thanks.

Don't decat the 180, slows it down and causes it to go into limp mode a lot

You need to check as it CAN be in the manifold or it CAN be under the car in the centre pipe it takes 30 seconds maximum to look.
If it's in the cat you need to get an aftermarket manifold, as addaz has said the oil filter housing is in the way so you can't just go and get a manifold from one that had the cat under the car.
If it's under the car, just get a centre pipe from a car that has it in the manifold and it will automatically de cat it.

AFAIK the MOT tester has to physically see a cat for an MOT for it to pass
Being a 2001 it will have a front manifold mounted cat

Could you imagine if every gti owner on here went about on every thread and said 'dont do it its not worth it because you have an inferior engine to me'? No, because this site would soon have no returning members
