clutch thudd?

my 206gti 2002model is slowly deteriating seemingly in the clutch?ive only had it 3 wks and its on its way out i fear.Gear changes are ok but every time i am not very carefull when changing up into second gear there is a big thudd as the gear goes in?if i try and make an even slightly fast change the thudd presents itself as i go from first to second as i release the clutch in second.The other changes seem ok but even them might be getting worse ive just noticed and will have to wait and see?Whats causing the thudd to occur?any ideas?thanks...

Could it be engine mounts? Maybe drive the car slowly and carefully with bonnet up and see if engine is leaping about.

Yes I agree it sounds a lot like engine mounts. The rear of the engine gearbox to body tie bar mount will be well worn by now if that is still the original 10 year old mount and any excessive movement there will make it very hard work to change gear smoothly, particularly noticeable with the more powerful gears of 1st to 2nd

How?? The bonnet covers the windscreen when open?

Ha! Maybe hire an olympic sprinter to run alongside?

On mine you could feel the movement by holding the gearshift or even looking at the gearshift with power on/off in 2nd. It takes surprisingly very little play on the rear gearbox mount (mine had play only of a few mm) to produce really nasty end of gearchanges and I was also getting severe judder when reversing at low rpm

A new rear gearbox mount made an enormous difference. Felt like a new car

Mine does this and also has clutch judder. Usual a sign that the clutch is getting old. Get a garage to have a look to be sure.

I had pretty much exactly the same thing, and it was a rear lower engine mount!

what I mean is of course, with an assistant, pull the car forwards a couple of feet, and back again , with the bonnet up. (Or take bonnet off of course)

To be honest, the movement at the top of the engine is so small you'd have a job to spot a worn rear mount as the other engine mounts are quite high so it doesn't rock much up there, it's all down low

 

If you put the car securely up high enough and have a good look at the rear mount then if it looks like this with gaps and cracks between the outer casing and the inside rubber then it is knackered
