Its probably to allow any water that gets inside to drain out. Although I have fed wires through mine.

Why would water get inside the battery box? The pipe is there to cool the battery.

Is it a good idea to put the battery inside a metal box?

Not if the car rolls-over, (touch wood).

Might be good to put some insulating material to the inside of the top-lid.

unless the road is total flat otherwise you will need some insulator or strap to stop the battery from moving...

All over that issue!! its got plastic all round to ensure no sparks occour and the top has been drilled and tapped to hold the battery in place!

It's a cooling pipe .... batteries do get warm and in a metal box, it's liable to get a lot warmer ...

Seems a bit of a chocolate teapot idea. Doesn't do anything the original can't and can't see it looking better either.
