#1: Mis-fire/Running on 3 Author: Tiago, Location: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Mon Apr 30, 2012 1:32 pm
    ----
Hi, went to work the other day, pretty wet with all this rain! All was fine however.

I finished work and suddenly my engine is running on 3 cylinders, I drove it around 8 miles before I could stop, turned it off and after a bit of fiddling around the coil & injector rail it ran back on 4 and this took me 30 miles back home running completely fine, while at the service station I bought some reddex which I thought could possibly help clean out a bocked injector (used a whole bottle for 1/4 of a tank).

Woke up in the morning, back onto 3... and then later in the day onto 4 again, but this time without touching anything and drove it a couple of miles to see if the problem returned but nope it was fine.

I decided to investigate a little more today as it was back onto 3 cylinders, I had it on a diagnostic system which told me there was a some short circuit on injector 3 along with random misfiring fault. (Sorry I didn't save the codes but might be able to retrieve them tomorrow) After this I checked the temperature on the exhaust manifolds and number 4 was the coolest one.

After this I took out the plug on injector 3 and the engine bogged down even more, replaced it and took it out of injector 4 and no change on engine behaviour.

I then decided to do a compression test and this told me brought up 210 pretty much on all cylinders except number one which was slightly higher. At the same time I also checked the spark plugs that I removed and all of them were dry.

Basically I need a bit of help diagnosing the problem. Starting the car is fine and dry plugs tell me that anything going in is being burnt.

What I am confused about is if I need to replace injector 4 or if there is another problem?

Any help would be much appreciated!

PS: Sorry for the long read, just thought i'd cover everything I've done!

Remember its PSA so that means cylinder 1 is the GEARBOX end, make sure your looking at / working on the correct cylinder.

Yup, I read that somewhere online and I'm sure it is the right cylinder Smile

injector 4 is always the first one to fail....thanks to the air vent on the bonnet lol

your problem is in the coil pack, not the injectors, when the spark plug don't work, the injecotr will not do it's job which is injecting fuel with the same time of the spark plug making the spark to explode,so all is connecting together.

I see, that is one thing I forgot to try as I didn't have time to do so.

If I remove the coil pack and spark plugs, will there be a visible spark so I could check this?

Thats the problem then, thrown them away & fit BOSCH spark plugs.

NGK + 206 = misfires Wink

Would it really be something simple as a spark plug?

I'll go out tomorrow and buy some and see what happens, all of them looked fine and it has been running on them for around 7 months now. I did plan on buying some Super 4's, would they be alright?

Bosch Super Plus or Super 4, doesnt really matter they both work fine.

Super 4 has a longer service life but they cost more to buy.

Misfires caused by NGK spark plugs are a well known issue with PSA Peugeot / Citroen engines with the all in one coil pack design.

Plenty of threads on this very forum on the subject Wink

Alright I'll have a look at the plugs tomorrow and test them, hopefully it is the problem as its the cheap way out Razz

Thanks everyone for your help, I'll update tomorrow as soon as I can!

I started it this morning and it was fine! Went for a little drive and no problems came up so I went ahead and cleared any error codes there were on the car, went for a 10 mile drive and it was all good.

Got back and changed to some Bosch Super Plus plugs that I purchased today and the car went back to misfiring/3 cylinders again. So I took the coil pack out along with the spark plugs and checked for sparks and all were healthy so I set off again back home with the engine running fine. Got halfway and it decided to pack up again...
