#1: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 1:40 pm ---- hello just had quite a bad accident, I'm in need of any help on what i may need to replace!
I've basically smashed off the bottom corner of my sump i noticed right away and turned the car off so have not damaged the internals, all i can think off is i need a new sump but looked on service box and there £360 that seems a hell of a lot to me, will it be a job i can do myself or is it quite an intense job not like undo the 16 or so bolts and it will pull off?
Any help will be great thanks
#2: Re: just had a bad accident Author: broadblaster, Location: south coastPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 1:48 pm ---- easy enough to do mate as you say undo all bolt pull off then new gasket new sump and bolt back togeather.
just hope its not run long enough to cause any other damage.
#3: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 1:50 pm ---- Thanks for the reply! i really do hope so!
#4: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 1:51 pm ---- heres the damage!
#5: Re: just had a bad accident Author: broadblaster, Location: south coastPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 1:57 pm ---- bloody hell what you hit a curb at high speed ????
#6: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:00 pm ---- nope is was a damn high half a speed bump!!! with tile at the edges and one of the tiles smashed into the corner and took both the tile out and my sump
#7: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:01 pm ---- looking into the sump there that black thing what is that? also what would that black pipe be used for that came off ?
Thanks
#8: Re: just had a bad accident Author: broadblaster, Location: south coastPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:02 pm ---- gutted for you mate. how long did the engine run for after it was hit as will only take a few seconds with no oil to do the main bearings in sorry
#9: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Howey, Location: Kings LynnPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:03 pm ---- Good effort there!
#10: Re: just had a bad accident Author: broadblaster, Location: south coastPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:04 pm ---- not 100% sure on the 180 as never had the bottom end apart on one of them but looks like the oil pump and oil pick up pipe
#11: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:08 pm ---- it ran for for about 5 seconds if that! the oil took about 20 mins to drain out, thats what i thought it looks like but am not sure "/
#12: Re: just had a bad accident Author: CPB46, Location: HampshirePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:10 pm ---- The black pipe looks like the oil pick up, would usually have a mushroom shape gauze on the bottom.
Don't go by halves, do you!! Lol
#13: Re: just had a bad accident Author: broadblaster, Location: south coastPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:13 pm ---- was it knocked right off like it is in the pics or was it just cracked and you pulled it apart if it was just cracked then you may be luckey.
#14: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Seabook, Posted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:14 pm ---- always use PSA sump; cheap sump will rust away very shortly.
even a secondhand sump is still good as i rarely see corrosion on the sump
#15: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:18 pm ---- only the corner with what i think is oil temp sensor had come off the other bit i just pulled off, so i don't really know no I'm starting to worry i always use original parts where possible but thats for the heads up
#16: Re: just had a bad accident Author: iainlovatt, Posted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:19 pm ---- get a second hand sump as stated Easy fix,
#17: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:20 pm ---- i wouldn't know where to look for one
#18: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:20 pm ---- It's an alloy sump so won't be corroded. The tube is the probe from the oil level/temp sensor.
The oil pump is level with the bottom of the block not in the sump.
#19: Re: just had a bad accident Author: broadblaster, Location: south coastPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:20 pm ---- think if it was me i would get the pump sorted (and pick up) bolt a new sump on fill up with fresh oil and see what it sounds like when started mate you will soon know if you got a major problem
#20: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Seabook, Posted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:21 pm ---- well if you are really running short of cash you can always buy a welder a pint
#21: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Reflekt., Location: South WalesPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:22 pm ---- If its the speedbump at fault you could possibly claim from the council? Not 100% on that but its been done before!

Well you might be lucky and someone on here knows of one!
Otherwise I use ebay to track down people breaking Pugs and contact them, or there are specialist breakers ... try google.
You tell them what you want and wait for the calls. There are a few sites like that. Last edited by gazza82 on Wed May 02, 2012 2:49 pm; edited 1 time in total
#23: Re: just had a bad accident Author: spike_202, Location: West midsPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:35 pm ---- Is your car unusually low? If so I'd be looking for some compensation from the council or who ever maintains the road,
#24: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 2:54 pm ---- i wouldn't say its that low tbh, I'm going to ring them up tomorrow and see what they say about it!
#25: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Howey, Location: Kings LynnPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 3:11 pm ---- How fast were you driving? It takes some force to do that...
#26: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Wed May 02, 2012 3:25 pm ---- i hit it at about 25 like any other speed bump "/
#27: Re: just had a bad accident Author: -Dave-, Location: North ManchesterPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 3:50 pm ---- Ouch. I did this on my old Capri and couldn't claim as the car had been lowered. However my engine was fine and it had been running about ten seconds afterwards. I sourced a replacement sump from a knackered engine that was being scrapped and swapped them over. Did the job. Now I know that was a older engine with but theoretically because you turned it off do quick I would say the chance of major damage would be slim. Also 25mph over a speedbump, I take them nice and slow lol. Already lost a piece of exhaust a few weeks ago and after seeing that I will be going even bloody slower now.
#28: Re: just had a bad accident Author: 00budham00, Location: IpsPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 5:35 pm ---- Cost me 400 inc rad an fitting of new sump
#29: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 5:37 pm ---- Reminds me of when my mate had is unreasonably low Corsa. I towed him 3 times when he smashed his sumps.
#30: Re: just had a bad accident Author: LeeThr, Location: North West WalesPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 8:57 pm ---- If anybody knows if the 180 sump is the same as the 138 sump then you can buy my 138 sump.
#31: Re: just had a bad accident Author: rick-gti, Location: welshpool, mid walesPosted: Wed May 02, 2012 11:42 pm ---- Have just sold a sump for £20, if i had known how much they were new id have asked abit more. You should be fine, shouldnt be any internal damage. Mate of mine hit a bolder and smashed his sump on his 306 d-turbo, he drove it about 800 yards with no oil and that was fine.
#32: Re: just had a bad accident Author: HDI90, Location: sunny stokePosted: Thu May 03, 2012 12:50 am ---- have a look on service box see if the part numbers match for the GTI and 180
#33: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Thu May 03, 2012 3:21 am ---- Thanks lee but have just bit the bullet and brought new from pug the 138 and 180 have a slightly diff part number and is £1 price difference, think the total was £360 with gasket sealent, oil probe sensor and sump! Not to bad could have been worse!
#34: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Harry, Location: StaffordPosted: Thu May 03, 2012 3:38 am ---- Sold 180 sumps for £30, don't have any left though. If you know what you are doing may end up not being that pricey if you want to do it yourself
#35: Re: just had a bad accident Author: rick-gti, Location: welshpool, mid walesPosted: Thu May 03, 2012 3:47 am ---- Ive just took one off, quite easy if you have a socket set 10mm and 16mm and torx bits. Hardest part i found was getting the dip stick dissconected. But appart from that was a doddle.

#37: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Thu May 03, 2012 1:14 pm ---- in need of any advise possible! I've decided to start removing the sump but I'm stuck trying to remove the dipstick tube! how do you get to the torx screw the oil filter housing seems to be in the way what ever i try to do
Thanks
#38: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Andrew, Location: Black Country Ay IPosted: Thu May 03, 2012 2:04 pm ---- Someone should be able to correct me, but could you claim the repair from the council provided you weren't going too fast?
After all, there is no need to put tiles in speed bumps when normal humped ones do the job of slowing people down
#39: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Necro, Location: BedfordshirePosted: Thu May 03, 2012 2:12 pm ---- Them f*****g speedhumps! GRR...

#45: Re: just had a bad accident Author: rick-gti, Location: welshpool, mid walesPosted: Thu May 03, 2012 10:31 pm ---- Replied to your p.m before reading this. You should be able to get to the top torx bolt on the dipstick if you cant get to the bottom one. I had the engine out so thats probably why it was alot easier for me. Mine is a 138 so might be slightly different to the 180.
#46: Re: just had a bad accident Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Fri May 04, 2012 3:05 am ---- Thanks Rick ! I think I'm going to have to go from above just the inlet gets in the way and I trwd to remove it but couldny get it off
