#1: High pitch whine. Author: Sprotty, Location: newarkPosted: Tue May 22, 2012 12:38 pm ---- Had this since i bought the car, so thought i would get round to sorting it.
As the revs go up there is a high pitch whine coming from the power steering pump area. Is there any common issues with the pump to cause this or could it be something else in th same area?
Any input welcome.
Phil.

Have you checked the fluid level?
#3: Re: High pitch whine. Author: Sprotty, Location: newarkPosted: Tue May 22, 2012 12:52 pm ---- Hahaha, yeah i checked it then did a drain and flush. Filled with slick 50 steering fluid. No real change.

#5: Re: High pitch whine. Author: Seabook, Posted: Tue May 22, 2012 1:18 pm ---- when did you hear the noise?
Is the noise still there when the steering wheel is straight?
#6: Re: High pitch whine. Author: Sprotty, Location: newarkPosted: Tue May 22, 2012 1:20 pm ---- Its there all the time, in neutral, in gear, wheels straight and when turning. what noises do the pulleys tend to make on the aux belt if they are failing?
#7: Re: High pitch whine. Author: Timon2210, Location: PalestinePosted: Tue May 22, 2012 1:23 pm ---- it can be the power steering pump,it can be the alternator,it can be the Aux. belt,or the Aux. belt bearings and tensioner ,so you need to check it all.
#8: Re: High pitch whine. Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Tue May 22, 2012 1:24 pm ---- Check the aux belt
#9: Re: High pitch whine. Author: Seabook, Posted: Tue May 22, 2012 1:26 pm ---- i would have though is not from the PS pump then. could be aux belt or pulley or tensioner like Lee said above.
#10: Re: High pitch whine. Author: Sprotty, Location: newarkPosted: Tue May 22, 2012 1:28 pm ---- Its had a new aux belt recently when i had the cambelt done, should have done the pullys too but they seemed okay to me.
#11: Re: High pitch whine. Author: Sprotty, Location: newarkPosted: Tue May 22, 2012 1:54 pm ---- Is it easy enough to get the belt off to change them? How do you release the tensioner?
#12: Re: High pitch whine. Author: Ash, Location: Running from Ant and Lee and Adam...........Posted: Tue May 22, 2012 4:02 pm ---- Its the tensioner 'because I had the same problem with mine.
On a 1.4, it's p**s easy. Not sure about a GTI.
#13: Re: High pitch whine. Author: LeeThr, Location: North West WalesPosted: Tue May 22, 2012 5:17 pm ---- Could be a few things, might be a noisy alternator. Or if its the tensioner its pretty simple to remove, 16mm spanner to release the tensioner to take the bellt off on the gti.
#14: Re: High pitch whine. Author: Sprotty, Location: newarkPosted: Tue May 22, 2012 11:17 pm ---- Do I need to get the tensioner too or just the tensioner pulley?
#15: Re: High pitch whine. Author: LeeThr, Location: North West WalesPosted: Tue May 22, 2012 11:44 pm ---- The tensioners a complete unit.
