My gti has got an annoying rattle coming from the rear. I have removed the spare wheel cage thinking it was this but it is still there Confused
Exhaust seems to be free from any heat shields so im stumped as to what it is!

try wrapping the part the boot latch catches on with some insulation tape.

there's a plastic ring that either wares or breaks up and allows the boot lid its self to rattle.

dammm Sad

metal or plastic sounding ?

get someone sat in the back and go on a bumpy road to find what area the noise is coming from. ( i had my lad sit in the boot Wink )

i now have what sounds like a metal plate thats loose and tapping against something somewhere either behind the dash or in passengers door

i think 206's are just meant to make some noise or another Very Happy

Will have another look under the rear later, its definately a metal sounding rattle. It sounded like the spare wheel moving in the cage. Removed the whole thing but its still there. Have cable tied the cage catch up so that doesnt move. Confused

Might be something rolling around in the space where the wheel wrench is Razz i found a bulb in there once

Ive emptyed the boot so there's nothing in there at all. Going to get it up in the air and check all underneath as i have got a feeling it might be the heat shield by the fuel tank.

Also check for any play in the trailing arms as mine started out as a rattle, then whent to a clunk, then a thud, now a banging and craking and needs replacing lol

there's no play in the trailing arms bearings where done not so long ago. Its annoying as ive got a clunk from a track rod end and a rattle from the rear. People must think my cars falling appart, lol should have it sorted tomorrow.

These things are always hard to diagnose, luckily they are generally cheap fixes!

Right am very p***ed off now. Have had a good look over the undeside at the rear and found nothing. Got a mate to look at the trailing arm while I pulled on the o/s rear wheel and he said the arm was moving on the beam. Which means the bearings have gone. They were changed by the previous owner not to long ago. Obviously not done properly. I have two beams so plan to make 1 good 1 out of the two. Which will mean replacing the trailing arm bearings. Am not a happy bunny rite now.

They dont seem to hard to do. If you plan to lower the rear its worth doin abit more and doin the bearings. As your undoing the torsion bars. Just have to dissconect the brake pipes and anti-roll bar and the arm will knock off. There is a how to in the how to maintenance section.
