#1: Elec. windows no worky. Author: Necro, Location: BedfordshirePosted: Thu May 24, 2012 10:47 am ---- Well, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Only started happening 2 days ago. I try the switches and sometimes nothing happens at all.
What can be the problem?

Try taking the switch out and use abit of wd40 on it.
If no joy try getting a new window switch.

Cheapest for a GTi is £16 Ordered one just now.
My drivers side window is stuck half way down.
Anything I can do to get it back up without a working switch!?

Stick 12 volts in to the 2 wires that go to the window motor from the switch.
One way will make it go down, swop the polarity round & it will go up.

Two wires go to the motor: call them A and B.
If there's +12V on A and B is grounded -> window goes up.
If instead A is grounded and B is +12V -> window goes down.
You could connect 2 temporary wires onto the ones that go to the motor, and then by hand touch the other ends of these temp. wires to + and - on the battery. If the window goes the wrong way, just switch which wire is at + and - at the battery.
Just be careful how you connect to the wires and how you handle the ends around the battery to avoid shorts.
You might want to see if you have some mate that 'gets' the initial suggestion to assist (likely to be more familiar/comfortable around car electricity).

Take the doorcard off,
then take the insulations off,
Now you should be able to see the motor, and the wires that go to the motor,
Now all you do is put 12v to the motor, i used a car batter and briefly toucher the metal pins inside the connection block of the motor in the window mechanism, this will either make it go up or down, then just swap over the + and the - to revers it?
Hope that a bit easier!
All you are doing it testing the motor, !!!

It can be done by the switch or out in the door. By the switch is less cramped/easier to see, but more wires to confuse you...
As you unplug the switch, look at the plug with the wires.
There should be six wires:
1x +12V (feed )
1x ground (feed)
2x wires to left motor
2x wires to right motor
Going by this diagram, where 116 is the switch unit and 118 the drivers window motor, the wires you want are violet and grey in positions 3B/4A.
As long as you avoid the feed wires, brown and yellow/green in positions 3A and 1A you should be OK...
Since it's numbered 1A through 4B, I'd assume 2 rows x 4 (matches the unit in front of me).
If you identify the yellow/green wire, then you want the one in the same row but at the other end (presumably grey and numbered 608) and the one one step in but in the other row (should be violet and marked 609)
Not certain if this diagram applies to your car, but it's somewhere to start...
As you can see in the diagram, the wires change colour at some junction before they reach the motor, so if you do it out in the door instead of by the switch, the colours would be violet and brown, marked 604 and 605) (same for both doors/sides)
