#1: Radius arm bearing grease nipples Author: rick-gti, Location: welshpool, mid wales PostPosted: Mon May 28, 2012 1:11 am

I am going to be doing the radius arm bearings on my gti in the next week or so. I want to fit grease nipples to the trailing arms so that the bearings can be greased in hope that they can be maintained easier.
These where supposed to have been done by the previous owner but i dont think they where as the drivers wheel has slight camber (sits in at the top) and rattles like f**k.
Has anyone ever attempted to fit grease nipples to the trailing arms before?

I see your idea rick but isent it a sealed bearing thus not actualy lubeing the bearing? Just the are around it?

They are yes, just thought that being able to grease them up every so often they should last abit longer as they dont get greased enough due to them only rotating to 45 degrees.

I know what you mean but surely you would have to drill into the bearing casing to get grease to the actual ball bearings or you would just be coating the outer casing in grease what won't do anything?

There are seals but the bearing themselves aren't the sealed variety. I imagine if you axle is showing signs of wear externally the stub pins will be past their best and will need replacing too. I'd just strip the axle down and cake everything in grease. That should be plenty good enough.

I am struggling to find the bearing kit for my gti, i cant get through to my local peugeot dealer. And can only get them from peugeot.
there's not alot of play in the arm so wouldnt have thought the axle pin will be worn. If i can get the bearings i will refurb my other beam and sell it.
This cars having a fortune spent onit lol

I've heard about the grease nipple mod on older PSA stuff with the rear torsion beam set up & I would do it if / when I need to change the rear bearings on mine.

Its a pretty simple mod, only issue is the beam needs to be in bits before you fit the grease nipples due to the swarf from the drilling & tapping to fit the grease nipples.

I have got two beams, ones on the gti and the others coming off the gti im breaking, but if i refurb it i want to do the bearings on the car so i can set the right height.
I will fit grease nipples to both beams if i do both.

EDIT: Will fit them when the arms are off Very Happy

Nope sorry, been many years since ive heard about / seen anyone bothering to do the mod.

Its mostly older people that are planning on keeping the car a long time that do it OR people with an engineering background.

Most youngsters today wouldnt even have a clue what a grease nipple / grease gun was OR even how its meant to work Laughing
