#2: Re: Brown Sludge Author: Seabook, Posted: Tue Jun 05, 2012 1:03 pm ---- that looks like oil in coolant.
apart from HG,
it could also be engine oil cooler or gearbox oil cooler is leaking.
i think both use engine coolant in the circuit Last edited by Seabook on Tue Jun 05, 2012 1:06 pm; edited 2 times in total

#4: Re: Brown Sludge Author: richpowell91, Location: Melton Mowbray LeicestershirePosted: Tue Jun 05, 2012 1:11 pm ---- As Seabook says it definitely looks like its been contaminated by oil. Mine was like that when my head gasket went for the first time.
What engine is it?
#5: Re: Brown Sludge Author: Nuve, Location: NewcastlePosted: Tue Jun 05, 2012 1:12 pm ---- 1.4 triptronic box ... first thought i had was HG like
#6: Re: Brown Sludge Author: richpowell91, Location: Melton Mowbray LeicestershirePosted: Tue Jun 05, 2012 1:22 pm ---- I know when mine went the only thing that made me check under the bonnet was i had a misfire which turned out to be an injector. You could check under the rocker cover for "mayo" as both times mine has been thick with it even though the oil filler cap was clear.
#7: Re: Brown Sludge Author: Nuve, Location: NewcastlePosted: Tue Jun 05, 2012 1:29 pm ---- was total accident i looked if i'm honest .. was checking the valve from my brake servo and just randomly took the bottle cap off .. no idea why .. nd found this .. got it in the garage 2moro for the brake servo so al ask the lads to check it out ... nightmare already had a HG go on ma last car :/
#8: Re: Brown Sludge Author: unstabletable, Posted: Tue Jun 05, 2012 2:04 pm ---- I did see an old trick once involving compressed air...
you take the spark plug out of one cylinder, and remove the coolant cap. Pump air into into the cylinder (using an attachement that screws into the spark lug socket), and if the coolant bubbles - that's where your head gasket may have cracked.
I've never tried it, but it stuck in my head - not sure if its any good to you, or indeed if it is ill-advised!
#9: Re: Brown Sludge Author: devotedsniper, Location: Tamworth, StaffordshirePosted: Tue Jun 05, 2012 5:23 pm ---- It could be the head gasket as you've said, when my 1.4's went there were no signs other than mayo till it completely went and started forcing coolant/oil mix out of the reservoir even when the cap was on.
