#1: Compression Test Values Author: Schumi, Location: Istanbul / TurkeyPosted: Sun Jun 10, 2012 1:56 pm ---- Hello Everyone.
Is anybody know what is acceptable values for compression test of 206 GTI180 (EW10J4S). I need brand new engine value and lowest acceptable value. I'm not interesting about difference ratio on cylinders.
Thank you.
#2: Re: Compression Test Values Author: V9977, Location: Athens, GreecePosted: Mon Jun 11, 2012 3:09 am ---- Compression ratio = 10.8 for EW10J4S (RFK)
Don't know about min/max though.
P.S. Did you sort-out the whistling in the gearbox?

Actually compression ratio for EW10J4S 177 hp RFK engine 11.0:1 and EW10J4 138 hp RFR engine 10.8:1.
But that is compression ratio for volumetric value. I need test value psi or bar showon on gauge. Like 180-210 psi
And I will go service this month (I hope) for whistling crown wheel.
#4: Re: Compression Test Values Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Mon Jun 11, 2012 7:22 pm ---- Not that much experience on these engines but lots of experience on others and for an 11:1 compression ratio I would expect a range of 150psi worn engine (any less and it would be getting attention) to 210psi maybe a little higher for a good condition engine.
PSI value is not just dependant on compression ratio but also manufacturers cam timing.

#6: Re: Compression Test Values Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Sat Jun 16, 2012 8:36 am ---- Do the compression test and then ask for comments. You will probably get more replies. Also try the tuning section.
Values should be within 10% of each other.
If they are less than about 170 put a small squirt of oil into the cylinder and retest. An increase in pressure suggests worn rings and / or bores. No increase suggests valve seats or cylinder head gasket.
The values I have given already are a very good guide
#7: Re: Compression Test Values Author: Seabook, Posted: Sat Jun 16, 2012 8:43 am ---- i think there is just too much variables.
different camshaft, different gasket (even oem gasket got a few different thickness); and other bits and bobs will also affect compression value.
Not to mention using different pressure gauge will also give different reading....

Thank you but I know how can i interpret results of wet and dry compression test. We already made test over an engine on scrapyard for buying. We will put that engine on 205. But we need average values for starting reference.
@Seabook.
That gti180 engine complete bone stock and 105.000 km on odometer. And its giving nearly 9.5 bar (140 psi) on all cylinders. But I seems to low. I think If the cambelt didnt change on dealer maybe non peugeot guys made a bad timing especially on exhaust cam pulley.

really have no idea; you would expect to be a bit higher than that.
But again, 180gti has a longer duration cam than normal car so it would give a lower reading too....
#10: Re: Compression Test Values Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Mon Jun 18, 2012 4:18 pm ---- I would not be handing over any cash for an engine that only has 140psi.
Did you spin it over with a good battery - a poor battery will give lower results.
Was the throttle wide open - closed throttle will significantly reduce readings.
#11: Re: Compression Test Values Author: swaynie, Location: United KingdomPosted: Fri Jun 22, 2012 4:39 am ---- I know im only new to the forum but have you tried a wet test and if all 4 cylinders are within 10% of each other the engine is fine even if the compression is low, this can be a number of things such as weak cranking faulty tester when was it last calibrated has it ever been dropped? was the throttle open.
#12: Re: Compression Test Values Author: nido, Location: Athens, GreecePosted: Fri Mar 25, 2016 1:53 pm ---- I'm looking for the same info for my 206RC since I'm burning quite a bit of oil and I'm planning to do a compression test to get an idea of what's going on...
