#1: Horrendous Noise from my 180s Engine Author: Shortstuff, Location: Gloucester PostPosted: Fri Jun 15, 2012 9:33 am

Hi All

Ive done a search for this so apologies if I didnt find anything if this has already been covered.

Basically I have a horrendous noise which can be easily heard from a distance of the car idiling, inside when driving etc.

Its just passed its MOT and had a Service and had the Cam belt changed 30k ago (2 years ago)

I took it for a good drive over the brecon beacons a few weeks ago, it had plenty of oil. But was driven hard.

Anyway couple days later this interesting noise started coming from the engine.
The way to describe it is some kind of ticking/rubbing noise.
It sounds as is something is going around and around and occasionally rubbing on something.
The sort of noise you would get if your push bike wheel was bent/buckled and rubbed on the brake pads.

Now this noise has got worse over time. Becoming Louder.

When I had MOT done all Peugeot said was recommended cambelt change, but changed their mind when i said only done 30k.
They then said they knew it was coming from behind the cam belt but want to charge me £90 just to investigate further.

I was just wondering before i cough up the cash if anyone had a similar issue or any good ideas.

Ive used a Stefoscope to try and hear better and the noise is loudest from the cambelt area.

Ive taken the top cough off and the belt looks absolutely fine to me.

Thanks in advance

Does it get louder or more violent when driven?

I wonder if the belt is too tight........It will appear (visually) to be fine but will sound bloody awful. I believe its the load on the bearing in the tensioner that makes the noise.

Does it sound like this?

If it a belt issue change it ASAP what's cheaper a new belt or a new engine!

If it's any one of the belt, water pump or tensioner dont take the chance, just change the lot. Belt could be stretched, bearing in tensioner or pump could be failing and if it goes completely, your engine is scrap. Best not take chances mate.

Give the engine a rev and see if the noise picks up. Cambelt needs changing with age as well as mileage.

Thanks for all your replies.

Its quieter when warm, I wouldnt say it gets much louder when revving.

I took the arch liner off at the weekend and got underneath, undid the bottom cam belt cover slightly to move it away to see if thats the problem. It got a tad bit quieter but believe its just because the noise is not echoing.

Using the Stefoscope jobber I determind the noise was coming from the Tensioner area. I am in the process of contacting Peugeot and GTi180boy to get it repair.

Will probably have to get new Cambelt, Tensioner and Water pump by the sounds of it.

Shame as its all only 2 years old and done 30k.

sounds normal.

180gti tends to fail on cambelt a lot earlier than other model; i have seen a few with less than 35K on clock and snap the belt

Better than the GTi 6 where they can snap in under 30k Laughing

On the flip side of this mine was on 62k before it was changed, may have been playing with luck a bit Laughing
