#1: Looking to Buy a 206, Questions? Author: chrisb1357, Location: Leicester PostPosted: Tue Jun 19, 2012 5:31 am

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a Peugeot 206 2nd hand and have around £1000 to £1500 to spend. Have been looking at models in the year 2000 and 2001 but wanted to know what should I be looking for when viewing a car and is there any 206 issues I should be checking for when viewing. Also is there any models or spec to keep away from.

Any advice would be a great help and do you think I could get a good runner for my budget above. Was not sure if to buy private or trade as I have had issues in the pass buying private and I had no come back from a private seller.

Chris

Trade will be more expensive.

Avoid: 1.1 Petrol /1,9 Diesel. Although, the 1.1 is only avoidable as it is slow. The 1.9diesel (non turbo) is just dire. The 1.6HDi should only be considered if you have deep pockets. The FAP, Turbo and DMF are known to fail/need replacing, and none are cheap.

The best car: 2.0HDi.

Problems: Rear Axle is the usual sticking point on the 206. Check for clunking and play. Although, a decent rear axle is usually sub £200. So knock that off the price.
Front wishbones and CV joints.

Other than that, just the usual 'buyin a car' checks.

All that that Tom said plus make sure the cambelt has been done, with those ages it may need to have been done twice.

What about the 1.4LX or GTI versions etc

This will only be used as going to and from work etc and my wife is due to pass her test soon so she will be the main user once she has passed. Got to see how insurance would be as well.

Same as all the above, I think the petrol engines are generally ok.

Price up your insurance before committing to buy. You might be surprised at how much it's going to cost you just for a basic model.

As well as what Tom says, the electrics on all Peugeots are suspect. You only need to look at them wrong and something goes faulty.

No project car or any mod's just something that is tidy and to use. Me and the wife work around 20 miles from home so she will be taking the car to work and i will be using other transport due to the location of her work. So any petrol engines should be fine apart from the above just the smaller the engine the less power i guest.

I know what you mean regarding electric issues on peugeot as my dad has one and he always have light bulbs going and i use to have a 306 a few years back and that was the same.

Do you think i could get something that is ok for £100 to £1500 that will last 2 years at lease.

So if you are travelling 40 miles a day and need something that is cheap to insure for a first time driver, the 1.4 diesel might be the one to go for

The DV4 engine is total s**te, the bulletproof 2.0 HDI is the one to go for.

1.4 HDI is gutless & problematic.

2.0 HDI is pretty much bulletproof.

had a 1.4hdi from 2006-2012 and never had any engine problems other than routine maintenance. always started and ran first time. but i guess that's what pro-active maintenance does.
it spent five of these years remapped.

it may not be much more to insure the 2.0hdi (as it is gutless for 2litre), but has a nicer gearbox than the 1.4.
