#1: Rear axle problems again Author: ukskater01, Location: sutton surrey/welwyn garden city PostPosted: Sat Jun 23, 2012 4:03 am

Hi everyone, recently I noticed a rattle from the rear end that has got a lot louder over the last few days, it only rattles going over bumps or when I bang on the o/s tire.
I managed to get it on a ramp at work and there is a small amount of play in the arm. Last year I had to get all the bushes and bearing replaced as the wheel was so wobbly it was touching the body.
I took it back to the place who did the work and they found the rattle to be my axle Sad
He's going to strip it down for me next Monday when I'm back from Ireland. I m thinking it's probably a new axle but not sure, when I was driving home last night it was ok but was a little bit twitchy on the motorway.
What do you guys think, new axle? And where is the best place to get one that isn't gonna go bang in two months
Sorry for the essay
Thanks andrew

Once the original beam is worn, thats it. As the bearing will have already cut into the ends.

Buy a refurb. That way it won't go again in it's lifetime.

Thanks guys, I knew it really but didn't want to admit it! Has anyone got any good recommendations for a refurbed axle?

Ah well, think it might be time to break it for parts Sad i don't think it's worth it as it needs new top mounts at the front too and it's cost me a good bit since I got it almost two years ago. It's done me good as a first car but I think it may be time to go Sad
I'm gonna get the axle stripped down to have a look at it first though because I will really miss it if it has to go

I've just emailed KrisB who's a recommended specialist on here. He's said he may be able to fix it if the pins haven't pitted. Think I'm gonna book it in for him to have a look. He also recommends IM axle as he's had problems with others if it needs a new axle, thanks for the info though seabrook. Wish me luck on only having to repair it otherwise I'm looking at spending almost £500!

If the bearing are worn the stub pin will also be worn. It's not really worth putting new bearings on a worn axle. So I'd dig deep and get your existing axle repaired properly.

But you can buy the end pieces for 50 euros each.

I just got one axle end and 2 bearing sets delivered 115 euros including postage.
