#1: slight issue with braking... Author: evilmunkey87, Location: TorquayPosted: Thu Jul 12, 2012 1:39 pm ---- Umm... I think i may have a problem with my brakes... Left to come home a short while ago, started to brake as i was coming down a hill and a buzzing noise started and it felt as if my brake pedal was trying to push back against my foot!!
My nearside disc seems so much warmer than the offside and a slight scoring on the disc has appeared. It feels as if the disc may be warped but has anyone experienced this before?
I will of course be changing discs and pads saturday morning but it is just odd that it has appeared from nowhere, i have not excessively broke at any point.
Can anyone shed some light?
Thanks

They need a thorough strip, clean and clear diagnosis if it is sticking pistons or seized pads. Sticking pistons are usually caused by the piston dust seal splitting and allowing road crude to contaminate and / or cause the piston to rust.
The above is possibly combined with old brake fluid that has absorbed water - it does that. When the water in the fluid gets really hot (due to dragging brakes) it boils and turns to steam thus expanding and the pedal pushes back against your foot.
Note: when fitting new pads you will need to push the pistons back into the calliper; if the pistons are dirty or have rust pitting on them this can damage he seals and cause them to leak. Ensure everything is clean and not rusty. Last edited by kandlbarrett on Fri Jul 13, 2012 8:07 am; edited 1 time in total
#3: Re: slight issue with braking... Author: evilmunkey87, Location: TorquayPosted: Thu Jul 12, 2012 2:31 pm ---- When I change the discs and pads Saturday I will ensure everything is cleaned up. I checked brake fluid and it is at the maximum line.
I just drove from my gf's parents to home, 3 minute drive roughly, tested braking, light braking, heavy, sharp etc and it seemed absolutely fine?! Literally earlier when it happened, it was fine to and from work, drove from hers to a restaurant, were in there for about an hour and half, came out to the car, and pulled out the car park, and that is when it happened. Car was cold, brake disc was warm to touch but offside was still cool.
Come to think of it, when I had the drop rods changed Sunday eve, I checked the brake lines wishbones etc and everything seemed normal, no corrosion or anything.
It passed its MOT 15 days ago, obviously it would have undergone thorough brake testing to pass which is why I think it could just be dirt around the seal and hopefully a clean up will sort it.
Just a bit concerned as anyone would be.
Thanks for the advice though, I will have a mate at ATS give my brakes a good going over before I change them just to be sure.

Also if fluid reservoir is full and you fit new pads make sure the fluid doesn't over flow when you push the pistons back - brake fluid destroys paint. If you do spill some then lots of water will wash it off but do so quickly.

Seemed fine on way home which led me to believe it was just a stone and the disc was the same temp as the offside one.
Will let you know how it is tomorrow

Sound more like the ABS cut in to me.

Oh the simple solutions are so often over looked!!!!
I had assumed the OP would know what ABS felt like but yes it is a perfect description of that and no action needed.
#8: Re: slight issue with braking... Author: evilmunkey87, Location: TorquayPosted: Sat Jul 14, 2012 3:50 am ---- I know what ABS feels like just didnt expect it to cut in at less than 10mph with very light braking?
Took wheel off last night, checked all around disc, caliper, lines, sensor etc everything seems fine. Took the caliper off too and no problems. From the deep score on the disc, one can only assume a stone got trapped annoyingly. Been fine since
#9: Re: slight issue with braking... Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Sat Jul 14, 2012 1:14 pm ---- A stone could stop one wheel from braking and fool the ABS into cutting in.
ABS will cut in at very low speeds down to stop. As an example try it on mud, grass or diesel covered road.
I once tried to stop at the end of a muddy track down hill coming to a main road. The ABS cut in and I went straight across the road. Tried again with ABS deactivated and stopped quite easily - tyres mainly locked but stopped quicker than with ABS.
