#1: Biting Point Peugeot 206 Author: CharlieAdshead, Location: KentPosted: Tue Jul 24, 2012 6:43 pm ---- Hi guys, this is my first car and I am finding that I am constantly stalling in first as the biting point is really high up, making moving off slow and difficult, and hill starts are obviously even harder, how can I change this if that is possible?

I have had people telling me the cable needs to be adjusted (if it can) Some tell me the bite should be low down and the rest say its because its a crappy French car.
Took me a while but got use to it, Although I would prefer it low down I don't think it can be altered as I was told its a hydraulic clutch?.

You've had a new cable but someone told you it was a hydraulic clutch.

Every car you drive will be different, even if it's the same model. As Tom says, learn to drive it properly.
If it's still causing you an issue in a few weeks, sell the car and buy an automatic.

Ok I said that completely wrong, I was told it was an automatic clutch cable and it was and I quote "A b*****d". He said something about it automatically feeding in ? or something, cant remember word for word.

Which one it is depends on what engine is fitted & also what side the steering wheel is on.
Until we know what engine is under the bonnet you aint got much hope of getting an answer.

Ah that sounds right, I was told its an auto adjusting cable on mine and its a 1.4L LX X Reg 2001.

It will be an auto adjusting cable for that engine.

Mine has a new cable and it bites almost exactly half way up in the clutch travel. With the new type cables you have to have the cable completely installed, including the bulkhead mounting bolts and only then release the adjusting mechanism to do its stuff
If you do it any other way around eg release the self adjuster block and then tighten the bulkhead mount bolts then you end up with a too high bite. You can make the bite point go higher but you can't make it go lower once it's ratcheted up the cable
If the bite point is so high up that the clutch is almost slipping all the time then I'd change the cable as it will wear out the release bearing very quickly if it's always in contact and constantly rotating. You should be able to pull the cable at the clutch fork end and measure the gap in the slack. If you can't get any slack at all then it's too tight and the cable needs changing

Yes people do need to adapt to different cars but if the bite point is so high that you feel like just breathing on the pedal will make it slip then that's not good for the clutch and bearing and it's very likely the cable has been installed incorrectly on this one

i know it is really hard (or impossible?) to stall those car with anti-stall mechanism

After driving something else when I get back in the 206 first things I notice is how heavy a 206 clutch in, how crap the gearchange is, how little feel you get through the brake pedal & also how heavy the steering is even with pas

My 2003 206 gearbox was a load of w**k though and the clutch was like trying to crush a brick with my foot lol, but the older one I have now is as smooth as Will Smith himself.

Ive had my car a little over a month and just getting used to the clutch now, i have a really sensitive accelerator too, makes me sound like a nutter sometimes when i pull away hehe.
