it detect the back pressure from the DPF, if it is higher than a certain unit (too much carbon clog up the filter) it will start to regenerate.

Obviously if the plugs aren't up to it then the process won't commence. Im not sure of the science involved, but for me the plugs failing was an easy solution, I'd rather change them than change the fuel cap sensor or even filling the fuel additive! Both jobs require the car to be in the air whereas with the plugs you can take your time. If your not confident best get a mechanic on them, check the 'how to' guides and decide! Engine block needs to be hot to remove them though or you will snap one!

the plug was required to increase the exhaust gas temperature to get the regen. to proceed

They are 29 quid delivered I think. That's probably the best way to get them unless you have a store near you? Try and avoid the fakes or lesser quality eBay ones!
