#1: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Mon Jul 30, 2012 2:42 pm ---- Hi guys, just recently having a problem with the engine of my 180 hunting and the revs dropping in the first 10 seconds of start up. The car is vibrating quite badly at points within this first 10 seconds also. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
#3: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Mon Jul 30, 2012 2:51 pm ---- Might give it a clean again! I've had that before and it brought up the anti pollution fault, this isnt flagging up any codes :/ strangeeee
#4: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Tue Jul 31, 2012 1:11 am ---- Did the same thing again this morning. Feels like its hunting and then the car vibrates like mad!!!

#6: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Steve206, Location: UKPosted: Thu Aug 02, 2012 6:50 am ---- Map sensor was recently suggested to me, unplug it and see how it goes.

#10: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Fri Aug 03, 2012 11:25 am ---- Will do, I've had a clean of spark plugs which were very black :/ only 8 months old. Cleaned the VVT sensor, and cleaned the inlet pipe around the butterfly! Can't give you reliable results until tomorrow morning though that's when the answers will be really apparent when it's at it's coldest. The MAF sensor is next on my list but I couldn't work out which one it was, is it the yellow clip on the intake?
#11: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: uttz, Location: Trinidad and TobagoPosted: Sat Aug 04, 2012 6:51 am ---- checked out my pug expert friend person... said to do an intialization or whatever you call it...essentially resetting the ecu... wasnt able to do it yesterday cuz he was way to busy.. will let you know how it goes
reason he said so was that a guy with a 2.0 307 was having the same issue and ttried it and it worked..
#12: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Sun Aug 05, 2012 2:38 pm ---- After cleaning spark plugs, VVT sensor and butterfly it seems to have solved the prOblem, the plugs were so black, is that normal? Only replaced in December 2011 :/
#13: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: uttz, Location: Trinidad and TobagoPosted: Sun Aug 05, 2012 7:14 pm ---- can i use carb cleaner to clean that stuff and u can take a pic of where the vvt sensor is... changed the plugs back in june trying to solve the probably didnt
#14: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: 138Andy, Location: NottsPosted: Mon Aug 06, 2012 5:29 am ---- mine does it every so often just rev it and goes back to normal not sure whats wrong , took it to Peugeot and they couldn't find nothing wrong with it
#15: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: uttz, Location: Trinidad and TobagoPosted: Mon Aug 06, 2012 7:41 am ---- this happens to me every morning..1st start for the day/ after a long sitting period...funny this is its a cold start as if it was winter but i like in the tropics :/
#16: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: uttz, Location: Trinidad and TobagoPosted: Mon Aug 06, 2012 4:27 pm ---- can anyone post a pic showing me which is the vvt sensor plzzzz and a general label of sensors on the 180lump
#17: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Tue Aug 07, 2012 3:17 am ---- The problem hasnt gone! what engine flush could i use, i tihnk this is the next thing to try.
The VVT sensor is under the engine cover on the left of the block. it has a wire going into the top of it with a plug. unclip the plug and undo the alan bolt then pull out. It looks like a tower. You cant miss it.
#18: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: uttz, Location: Trinidad and TobagoPosted: Tue Aug 07, 2012 3:48 pm ---- did that still no luck either isnt as violent as before tho
#19: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Wed Aug 08, 2012 1:13 am ---- I cant beleive i have a fault that isnt an easy fix. typical! Anyone else have any ideas!? Someone must have had this before.
#20: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Nick_C, Location: BristolPosted: Wed Aug 08, 2012 1:44 am ---- Coilpack? One issue i had, which caused problems starting, was that oil had leaked out the engine covers and gone down the spark plug holes. Once cleaned out was much better.
Nick
#21: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Wed Aug 08, 2012 6:09 am ---- Cheers nick, will get a photo up later tonight because i did have some oil under the coilpack, might have an oil leak cauing this. If so how did you have it cleaned out?
#22: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Ali_H, Location: Chichester, SussexPosted: Wed Aug 08, 2012 1:15 pm ---- Coilpack will normally cause a misfire, never heard of this before.
#23: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Nick_C, Location: BristolPosted: Wed Aug 08, 2012 1:38 pm ---- I just took plugs out and let oil drain in cylinder then turned it over a few times, lol
#24: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Wed Aug 08, 2012 4:11 pm ---- I'm lost now, wish it would just break and a code come up! I'm trying to sell it. It just doesn't want to idle properly and is misfiring on start up. Can't exactly sell it whilst this is happening!
#25: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Mon Aug 13, 2012 3:14 am ---- anyone else seen this?
#26: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: uttz, Location: Trinidad and TobagoPosted: Mon Aug 13, 2012 5:34 am ---- tried an initialization yet?
#27: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Tue Aug 14, 2012 7:25 am ---- no mate, don't know how to lol. im gonna take it to the garage and hope someone has seen this problem before!!
#28: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Fri Aug 17, 2012 5:19 am ---- Just been told to spray carb cleraner into the intake behind the butterfly.. Bit worried where it will go though lol. It is pretty black in there! What sort of damage would it do?!?!?!
#29: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: uttz, Location: Trinidad and TobagoPosted: Sun Sep 02, 2012 9:54 am ---- i did that with mine and seems to have eased up the problem...ideally u supposed to take it off but i did mine in short cut way... carb cleaner spray then wip with clean cloth so as to limit the dirtiness from getting in
#30: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: 206boyracer, Location: Sunny CornwallPosted: Sun Sep 02, 2012 10:19 am ---- Carb cleaner in the intake will just get sucked into the engine. Won't really do much at all as it will get sucked up before it cleans anything.
Have you tried cleaning the idle control valve. That could be sticking causing erratic idle.
#31: Re: GTI 180 hunting and vibrating Author: Steve206, Location: UKPosted: Tue Sep 18, 2012 4:26 pm ---- Have you sorted this yet? There was a similar problem the other day. Changed the throttle body as the old one wasnt working correctly.
