Strange tinny rattle noise
-> 206 Problems

#1: Strange tinny rattle noise Author: Chegothy PostPosted: Sat Sep 08, 2012 2:40 pm

Hi guys, just thought I'd post to the forums since you all obviously know a lot more specifically about 206's than the answers I find on Google which are more generalised. Anyway, I bought a 1.4 Petrol LX last year. Recently it started making an odd tinny rattle.

Location

I think it comes from anywhere between the middle and the front of the car. I can't pinpoint whether it's nearside or farside so I'm guessing it must be somewhere midway (in terms of width).

Typical Experience

- I'm in gear but the throttle is closed (one slight bit of pressure on the throttle removes the noise. Weird, eh?)

- Can be heard very very faintly while coasting.

- When I'm in revving the car in neutral, a tinny rattle seems to crop up at about the 20k-25k RPM mark but no higher and no lower.

Notes

I should probably mention that performance doesn't suffer whatsoever. Turning either direction doesn't make a difference. It's not unbearably loud but it's bloody annoying.

Conclusion

Most of you will be aware of what I suspect but I'd rather not say yet until I hear your completely fresh opinions. Any help would be appreciated a lot!!! Laughing

If its there when not on the throttle sounds likeit could be the diff bearing on the way out.

With it only happening between 2k - 2.5k RPM whilst not in gear its is probably something resonating. I'd check the exhaust myself, sounds like its rattling against the heat shield. It would also explain why it disappears whilst under load while driving as the engine changes position slightly due to rubber mounts.

Check the exhaust mid-section pipe to cat pipe with the springs. Tighten them up and see if it makes a difference.
If so, there is a ring between the join which just disintigrates and causes this and loads of other effects too by lossening that join and leaking as well.

Yeah, I'd say exhaust too. Possibly the innards of the CAT having a bit of fun....

Get a exhaust place to look at it, could be the famous manifold rattle, heat shield, exhaust clamps or hangers.
