#1: Strange tinny rattle noise Author: Chegothy, Posted: Sat Sep 08, 2012 2:40 pm ---- Hi guys, just thought I'd post to the forums since you all obviously know a lot more specifically about 206's than the answers I find on Google which are more generalised. Anyway, I bought a 1.4 Petrol LX last year. Recently it started making an odd tinny rattle.
Location
I think it comes from anywhere between the middle and the front of the car. I can't pinpoint whether it's nearside or farside so I'm guessing it must be somewhere midway (in terms of width).
Typical Experience
- I'm in gear but the throttle is closed (one slight bit of pressure on the throttle removes the noise. Weird, eh?)
- Can be heard very very faintly while coasting.
- When I'm in revving the car in neutral, a tinny rattle seems to crop up at about the 20k-25k RPM mark but no higher and no lower.
Notes
I should probably mention that performance doesn't suffer whatsoever. Turning either direction doesn't make a difference. It's not unbearably loud but it's bloody annoying.
Conclusion
Most of you will be aware of what I suspect but I'd rather not say yet until I hear your completely fresh opinions. Any help would be appreciated a lot!!!

I'd check the exhaust myself, sounds like its rattling against the heat shield. It would also explain why it disappears whilst under load while driving as the engine changes position slightly due to rubber mounts.

If so, there is a ring between the join which just disintigrates and causes this and loads of other effects too by lossening that join and leaking as well.
