#1: 2.0 hdi 52 tank venting problem?? Author: cornishduke PostPosted: Sun Sep 23, 2012 9:07 am

i've a small issue with my 52 2.0 hdi. the fuel gauge is reading incorrectly and when my other half went to fuel up yesterday, the pump would not dispense fuel (as if the tank was full) and she ended up wearing diesel all over her feet. i've been advised it might be a venting problem within the tank??
any help would be appreciated!!

Is the tank already full? No such thins as a vent, apart from the canistor in the engine bay, but that wont affect fueling.

Are there not a few small bore vent pipes that run up to the filler neck on these? There is on my GTi tank.

no the tank isn't fu ll. we've done a fair few miles since the problem arose. i've just been to the petrol station myself to see for what happens, you know what women are like!! the pump kept clicking (as it does when full) i managed to get 6 quid in before it started pouring out onto the floor. the gauge reads just over half full and the digital read out on the dash says pretty much the same. if the tank isn't full then what is causing the diesel to poor over the floor??

Not that I've heard anything like this before but could it possibly be a faulty pump? Have you tried a different one to see if the problem persists?

Mine was pouring out fuel underneath the car recently when I was filling it up.
It turned out to be leaking fuel from the top of the sender unit on the tank.
I tried a new rubber seal but it still leaked so ended up replacing the whole sending unit which cured it.

You can easily check this by looking at the access cover underneath the rear seat which lifts off.
Mine had fuel all over where it had come out the top.

As my car is a 1.4 HDI it doesn't have a lift pump in the tank and the price was £70.
Might be more for yours as it has a lift pump built into the sender unit on the 2.0 HDI.

Andy
