#1: 206 hdi gti low oil pressure? Author: simonster_14 PostPosted: Tue Sep 25, 2012 3:03 pm

hi guys, pretty new to the forum, ill upload and introduce myself as soon as i have taken some decent pics of the car:)

basically bought a 206 1.6 hdi gti about 2 weeks ago and had low oil pressure warning flash up on the dash about a week after owning the car,
it was due a service so gave it a full filter, oil and coolant change including oil flush and replaced water pump, timing belt and aux belt same time because its coming up to that time... all has been well for about another week but had the low oil pressure warning pop up twice in one day but havent seen it since...about 3 days ago?

hoping it could be the sensor because its a tad intermittent?

questions, anyone else had a similar problem?
anyone know/ confirm where the sensor actually is? think its near or around the altenator?
anyone know what the oil pressure should be? my brother and father in law are both mechanics so should be able to throw a pressure tester on the to check it but wanted to know what figures to look for?

any help at all will be appreciated
thanks simon

the light will be on if oil pressure drop below 1 bar.

make sure you got the genius oil filter. cheap filter are known to cause oil pressure problem

it only comes on at start up, less than 2mins running and it will go out?

its a mann filter which isnt genuine but from a local reputable parts supplier which supply parts for all independant/private garages so wouldnt have thought it was poor quality? plus it was doing it before the oil was changed aswell?

its done 78,000 miles aswell which i didnt think was huge mileage for any diesel? so was kinda hoping it wasnt worn out already.

will check the oil pressure though, thanks for that

yesterday i took the sump off, wasnt really anything frightening in there, was a small amount of carbon build up in parts of the engine casing which i guess is normal which i cleaned as much as i could out and the oil pick up have a very small amount of dirt on it which i cleaned through, wiped the sump out and refitted all back together, filled up with oil.after that didnt show too much up thought best to swap the sensor and check the pressure,
on 1st start up it took a 3-5 seconds to build oil pressure then sat at 3bar, is this normal? with a 500rpm increase in revs the oil pressure went up to 4.5-5bar, could this show that the pump is on the way out because it takes a couple seconds to build pressure or is this normal?

anyone with a similar oil pressure problem, i would recommend checking the sump 1st because the oil pressure sensor is a nightmare to get to, had to remove the ac compressor, altenator and the intercooler bypass unit thingy,

On idle if iirc it should be minimum of 1.2 bar and creeps up to a min of 2.4 @ 4k rpm

So yours is fine, where did you check the pressure? As some can only be checked at the filter

On the old oil filter did it have a cross section in the middle? Was this missing, as if it is, your engine will more than likely be f****d

Checked the oil pressure at where the switch goes in... You wouldnt physically be able to get a adaptor big enough to fit where the oil filter is its like a 75mm diameter cap..

What do you mean by the oil filter cross section?
In the 1.6 hdi engine its a cartridge? Dripping in oil so some must be getting there? Dont think the engine is f**ked it starts 1st rotation of the engine and runs at normal operating temperatures, picks up as it should etc?

Thanks for your help

Yes i know that, im not retarted believe it or not Laughing
Its a large cap covering the filter, the peugeot tool is that simpley with a hole in the end. Thats how i do believe you get a true reading for oil pressure, but i guess the switch will do

The cross section in the CENTRE of the oil if its the type im thinking of (short stubby, no location peg on one end) can sometimes break up blocking a gallery, which yes may mean your car starts first time but if a gallery is blocked excessive wear may occur due to a lack of oil pressure. Hence f****d engine.

But with the reading you got, and if it is true to the game, i would persue more a switch than anything else

Ooohhh sorry i didnt read that too carefully 1st time around.

No my engine has a location peg, i cant imagine anything has fallen off the filter because all the ones ive taken out have still had their location pegs?

If the engine was ruined i would have thought id notice excessive oil temperatures etc because it wouldnt circulate correctly?

The switch has been replaced and as far as i know all has been well for 4 days now so will try it for a month and if anything happens in that time ill look in to throwing a new oil pump in Smile

Thanks for your help Smile
