#1: 206 headgasket ...... Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Fri Sep 28, 2012 3:36 pm ---- It looks like the headgasket is possibly on its way out - again. The previous owner had it changed around 18 months ago. I need to have a look in the morning but at the moment I have the sound of running water from the glovebox when revving the car. Tonight it started to weep water from the thermostat housing. I need to have a look in the morning top the water up and bleed the system, I'm not sure if there is a blockage or it's just the gasket on its way out.
There doesn't appear to be any mayo in the engine or oil in the coolant but the expansion tank does smell of fuel/oil. I'm wondering if it's worth repairing it or if I should just cut my losses and get shot of it.
I'll happily have a crack at doing the gasket myself, but has anyone got the torque settings and sequence for the head bolts ?

Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Fri Sep 28, 2012 3:50 pm ---- I would say there is some pressure there otherwise it wouldn't blow the water out from the thermostat housing. The wife said the car smelt of fuel inside so I think it's safe to say engine fumes are getting in the coolant.

Author: weeman, Location: oxfordPosted: Fri Sep 28, 2012 3:55 pm ---- fair does, a standard cooling system usual runs at appox 1 bar off pressure give or take. if your confident on a headgasket issue. good luck with the repair. if its been done previously be sure to check the block is true, and get the head skimmed to hopefully prevent further issues. youll need a thicker headgasket to compensate for the head skim. what engine is it?
#5: Re: 206 headgasket ...... Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Fri Sep 28, 2012 4:07 pm ---- It's the 1.4 8v it's done 94k, 1999 ..... I don't think it's a bad thing to do, I'd prefer to lift it off in one go that being with inlet & exhaust manifolds still on the head assuming it doesnt weigh too much. I was going to try and get away without skimming the head. I'm 50/50 on doing it, part of me wants to have a go, part of me thinks flog it and not have the hassle
#6: Re: 206 headgasket ...... Author: weeman, Location: oxfordPosted: Fri Sep 28, 2012 4:14 pm ---- if your confident with the spanners, get a haynes manual and its doable. the 8v is probably the easiest to work on out of all the engines.im sure there is probably plently of other guides etc online. its up to you mate, if your planning on keeping the car id advise skimming the head and checking the block with a steel rule. if both surfaces are true youll have a reliable seal. if the head is warped etc its just a matter of time before it goes pop again. the inlet can be left on. the exhaust mani will probs have to be dropped the clear the rad..
#7: Re: 206 headgasket ...... Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Fri Sep 28, 2012 4:20 pm ---- Thanks, either way I don't expect to keep it
#8: Re: 206 headgasket ...... Author: weeman, Location: oxfordPosted: Fri Sep 28, 2012 4:23 pm ---- fair enough up to you really then.. thanks
#9: Re: 206 headgasket ...... Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Sat Sep 29, 2012 11:51 am ---- Probably just too little sealer used on the housing causing it to leak, if the gasket has been changed and done correctly i doubt in 18 months its gone again
#10: Re: 206 headgasket ...... Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Sat Sep 29, 2012 12:37 pm ---- trouble is i cannot get rid of the running water sound from the heater matrix, i ran it until the fan kicked in and managed to bleed the system and the running water went away. Next time I started it the noise was back ....... i'm feeling i might have a go at changing it, bolts are £20 and the gasket is £20, the antifreeze is brown anyway ! So if i can swap it for less than £100 its got to be better off than selling it for spares ? I would have thought it would be worth around £550 in its poorly state and around £800 fixed up.
#11: Re: 206 headgasket ...... Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Sat Sep 29, 2012 12:43 pm ---- But mate why waste money?
Think about it, seal the housing again as any drawn in will cause the water sound. Then bleed thoroughly, that is about an hours job in total rather than a day to two for some
#12: Re: 206 headgasket ...... Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Sat Sep 29, 2012 1:15 pm ---- Hmmm, trouble is its also running a bit lumpy when cold, it's just started to get a little worse.
#13: Re: 206 headgasket ...... Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Sun Sep 30, 2012 6:55 am ---- Hmmm any codes?
#14: Re: 206 headgasket ...... Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Sun Sep 30, 2012 9:15 am ---- Nope no codes
#15: Re: 206 headgasket ...... Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Sun Sep 30, 2012 12:33 pm ---- I will take back my original statement then, perform a sniff test.
As we had one similar to this and on early morning starts it would run rough till a few minutes later, water slightly filling one combustion chamber causing it not to fire till hot
