So I have only just had a car wash, waiting outside I noticed steam from the engine thinking it was from the pressure hose, noticeably got worse looked inside and the coolant temp was on red limit! Now I am waiting for the AA im worried the engine won't start...?? Sad it probably was on the red for a good few minutes until steam starting forming. Could anything be damaged? There is a puddle ontop the engine

why you leave your engine idle anyway? straightly speaking 5-10 mins idle without fan on shouldn't cause overheat.

Hmm it still is overheating, aircon is not giving cool air and the fan won't turn.
Checking the fan relays.

There is a lot of corrosion on the fan relays and wiring, maybe enough water got in there to stop the unit working. There are two relays, anyone know if one is aircon?

After checking the relays:

Looks like I must also get a new fan wiring harness as the sockets and wiring look corroded. Anyone know the part names please?

I've got some stashed away somewhere in my stock of Peugeot parts, if I ever get bored one day ill take one apart Laughing

The pin out on the terminals will show if its just a normal 5 pin relay.

Yes they are, and no protection diodes on the coil either. (plain SPDT 12V)

Trouble if you clean them is because the top nickel-plating is gone, the copper will just oxidize green again in
no-time. I always bin those triumphantly and use silicon grease spray for future protection on the contacts.

The wiring terminals will be corroded too and might have even corroded right through enough to break the wires.

Ideally it needs the bumper taking off and a thorough clean up /repair making.

When you turn air con on you hear "click" noise, if this is from the relay then relays are OKAY?

That's the clutch on the compressor switching on.

hopefully the problem is as small as this, you know how I can check it is not the water pump?

check the bottom and upper coolant pipe.

if both are warm then water pump is fine

I replaced the wiring harness and relays but the fan only comes on at 105c ?? It is always go up to 105 until fan triggers and drops to 98c. Any thoughts? Thanks all for the help!

Lookslike the high speed fan is working but the relay controlling the slow one is crusted up.

I am sure I wired it all correctly, got two new relays also.
I can only think the resistor needs changing, it looks fine, but if the high speed fan works so the resistor must work?

#23: Re: Coolant overheated after car wash Author: Edward, Location: In the garage PostPosted: Mon Oct 08, 2012 1:09 pm

High speed fan doesnt use the resistor. The low speed fan uses the resistor to restrict the current to the fan.
If you remove the resistor and bridge the wiring and the fan spins at high speed you'll know the resistor is faulty.

thanks!

so apart from the resistor, with all wiring and relays and fan working at high speed can it be anything else?
