#1: How much coolant ? Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Sat Oct 06, 2012 11:25 am ---- I'm sitting here waiting for the cooling fan to kick in after changing the coolant. I had read the 1.4 8v took 6 litres but I've got just under 5 in mine I didn't drain the engine but I had flushed through the system including taking the radiator out and washing it through. I'm bored waiting for the fan ...l

you don't have to wait for the fan to bleed the system.

Any way it was all in vein, despite letting it sit ticking over for ages and getting rid of the water sound from the glovebox I topped the tank up to just over minimum, put the cap on and run it around the block. I get back home 2 mins and about 1 mile nd it's already got the water running in the glovebox again and the system is that pressurised steam is coming from the coolant tank, that looks its a little swollen and the bonnet is staying firmly shut until the morning. So it's going in the classifieds and on eBay. I wonder if £500 is too much ......

Author: SteveTDCi, Location: StamfordPosted: Sat Oct 06, 2012 12:25 pm ---- i didn't do it first time around, it was done around 12 months before I got it, it looks like it had been cleaned out well enough because when i flushed the system through other than a small amount of rusty water it was clean, the oil cap looks clean too. I'm not sure if a cheap gasket has been fitted but it does look like its been apart at some point The only thing i've noticed is a lot of water comes back to the system via the radiator overflow.
The car doesn't overheat, doesn't seem low on power (difficult to judge when the other 2 have over 250bhp) and seems to drive fine other than its hiccup first thing. I have toyed with putting some Steel Seal in which claims to solve the gasket issue and by all accounts does actually work but then part of me has had enough and doesn't want to waste money on it, its an £800 car i've covered near enough 7k in 9 months and its a bit cheaper to run than the cupra, coupled with i leave this at the airport where as with the cupra i always have a hire car so i'm happy i've got my moneys worth out of it. I'll take off some of the bits i've changed and flog them on here and put the car up on here and ebay.
